An intelligent introduction to bilingual education and structured English immersion.

This book was listed as an optional text to read for a Structured English Immersion class I need to take. The history and politics of K-12 public school bilingual education in the United States are nicely introduced by James Crawford. The previous title of this book (for the first four editions), Bilingual Education : History, Politics, Theory, and Practice, was an apt title because that is what this book is about. There is a detailed account of how California's Proposition 227 (that mandated Structured English Immersion for nearly all English learners in that state) came to be voted in as law in 1998, and how bilingual education has withered away in California as a consequence. There is a chapter "Indian Language Education" that gives a bird's-eye view of K-12 public school education for Native Americans, many of whom even today come to school speaking not standard English but an Indian English such as "Crowlish" (a mix of Crow and English) or Navajo English. They are English learners, too. For Theory, the author explains that conversational English (BICS), which might be acquired in two years, falls far short of the academic English (CALP) needed for school, which would be acquired in no less than eight years. This book has illuminating statistics and a comprehensive bibliography.

Good overview of Bilingual Education in America

This book gives a fairly detailed history of bilingual, multicultural and ESL education in America, including the politics and theories behind it.

One pitfall of the book is that it is obviously written from a liberal Democratic point of view - fine and even humorous at times if you're a Democrat, but I imagine faithful Republicans would find parts of the book to be one-sided and disagreeable.

Overall, though, the book is an easy read and really expanded my knowledge of the bilingual education debate in America.

Waste of money but needed for class.

The majority of this book is about what is wrong with ESL classes and is full of statistics that seem one sided. There is no hard evidence in this book and it doesn't take the time to explain how to effectively teach ESL learners, it just talks about what is wrong with America's way of teaching.
Unfortunately, I needed this book for class but it was a waste of money.
