About the Author
Giulio Zambon s first love was physics, but he decided to dedicate himself to software development more than 30 years ago: back when computers were still made of transistors and core memories, programs were punched on cards, and Fortran only had arithmetic IFs. Over the years, he learned a dozen computer languages and worked with all sorts of operating systems. His specific interests were in telecom and real-time systems, and he managed several projects to their successful completion. In 2001 Giulio founded his own company offering computer telephony integration (CTI) services, and he used JSP and Tomcat exclusively to develop the web side of the service platform. Back in Australia after many years in Europe, he now dedicates himself to writing software to generate and solve numeric puzzles. His web site, http://zambon.com.au/, is written in JSP on his dedicated server, which, unsurprisingly, runs Tomcat!

Great book for JSP noobs

**Note: I purchased the kindle e-book version of this product**

In my opinion, this book assumes a prior basic understanding of HTML, CSS, and Java programming. It builds upon that information by introducing the reader to JSP. I gave the book 5 stars for the following reasons...

1) The book walks you through installing all of the (free) software that you need to get started working with JSP. I was instructed to install Eclipse (a Java IDE), and Tomcat (web server software). This software can be found (and downloaded) for free on the Internet.

2) The book also walks you through configuring Eclipse and Tomcat.

3) The book comes with downloadable example files and an example web-app that you can load, examine and edit, etc.

All you need to know to get going

The author gradually brings you from "nowhere" to JSP, then JSF, using Tomcat and basic Java. Using Eclipse IDE. He explains and show you how to implement the Model View Controller (MVC) approach.

All his instructions on getting all you need, downloading, installing, configuring, are clear enough. A few typos here and there in the book. Really worth the price of the book!

Not sure though this is for "don't know anything about programming" reader! But for one who has already done some programming, I'm sure this is an excellent book.

Real-World, Hands-On Examples!

What I liked most about this book is that it gives you a hands-on, real-world, example application to create. And like most example applications I've seen in the technical books I read, this one is a shopping application. The author takes you through three different variations of the application, the third one being more JSF-like that is XML-based. As this version seems more "modern", I spent most of my time understanding that example...but I had to get through the first few chapters that build up to it.

The book also has you construct a simple shopping database using MySQL to support your example applications. You don't need to be a MySQL expert to set this up, however. Another plus is that the author takes you through the basics of how the Tomcat server is constructed. I've always been afraid to peer inside the folders of this server, but after reading this book I have more confidence in messing with the context.xml and server.xml files.

About the Author
Aleksandr Sergeyevich Pushkin, b. June 6 (N.S.), 1799, d. Feb. 10 (N.S.), 1837, was Russia's greatest poet. His use of the vernacular as the language of poetry freed Russian writing from the constraints of tradition and set new literary standards for novelists and poets, and his preference for subjects from history and folklore brought fresh vitality to Russian literature. Anthony Briggs, Professor of Russian at Birmingham University, Senior Research Fellow at Bristol University, is a well-known writer and broadcaster on Russian cultural affairs and European poetry. His recent translation of War and Peace was critically acclaimed. Among his many publications are six editions in the Everyman's Poetry series.

Good, fast fun

This book of poems can be read quickly. It includes English translations by up to ten other poets, but 33 of the 60 poems in this book have been translated by A. D. P. Briggs. Briggs also revised the translation of the 57th. Poem 16, "The Caucasus" is credited to F. Cornford on pages xxi and 19, but the Acknowledgements on page 104 credits a book, POEMS FROM THE RUSSIAN (1943), "trans. Frances Cornfield and Esther Polianowski." Of the Pushkin poems translated by C. M. Bowra in a book from 1948, eight poems are included in this book.
The Contents lists the titles of the poems, and the Introduction explains poetic qualities which the translations in this volume attempt to match, "partly to ensure that interesting formal properties like these are not lost." (p. xv). The first paragraph on page xvi attempts to show how the poems "are grouped roughly thematically," into personal, the natural world, poetry, love, some poems of ideas, for the first half of the book. The longer works in the final portion of the book include the concluding stanzas of YEVGENY ONEGIN, Chapter 8, Stanzas 33-51.
A few things about this book seemed British to me. The word which made the least sense to me was "judder," in the poem "The Waggon of Life," on page 39. If the word was made up to produce a rhyme, the line it was in would have made more sense if it had ended with the common word, shudder:
Feeling the waggon shake and shudder.
The stanza doesn't end with: "We cry, `Slow down you silly buggy!"

This book of poems can be read quickly. It includes English translations by nine other poets, but most (33) of the 60 poems in this book have been translated by A. D. P. Briggs, who has devoted four books to Pushkin and has also edited four other volumes in the Everyman's Poetry series. Briggs also revised Chapter 8 of Oliver Elton's translation of Yevgeny Onegin, which he describes in the Introduction as, "A few stanzas from the end of the novel are included here in order to give a general impression of how the novel works." (p. xvii). Poem 16, "The Caucasus" is credited to F. Cornford on pages xxi and 19, but the Acknowledgements on page 104 credits a book, POEMS FROM THE RUSSIAN (1943), "trans. Frances Cornfield [this mistake might be due to the enormous number of actual cornfields that currently exist on this planet] and Esther Polianowski." Of the Pushkin poems translated by C. M. Bowra in a book from 1948, eight poems are included in this book.

What shall we do out in the country?" Pushkin's major themes are identified as the personal, the natural world, poetry, love, some poems of ideas, and his poems on those topics comprise the first half of the book. The longer works in the final portion of the book include the concluding stanzas of YEVGENY ONEGIN (which has 366 stanzas altogether), Chapter 8, Stanzas 33-51.
The poems "Remembrance" and "Elegy" are mentioned as examples of a Pushkinian philosophy of life. Thoughts "Settle in limpid twilight languidly distilled," as the third line of the poem "Remembrance" puts it. Pushkin is capable of other feats, and the introduction observes that one long poem, "(known in Russian as `Gavriiliada' after the angel Gabriel) is an overtly sacreligious re-enactment of several Bible stories (Adam and Eve, Joseph and Mary, the Annunciation, etc.) run together into an extended sexual romp." (p. xviii). This kind of thing is usually considered a catastrophe, as far as serious philosophy is concerned, and "In its day Pushkin could not acknowledge authorship; neither could Russian criticism until recently." (p. xviii). It reminds me of the poem, "the boys i mean are not refined," by e. e. cummings, which was only included in a limited edition of nine copies of his book, NO THANKS, in 1935, but was dropped in subsequent editions until after his death in 1962. Similarly, the introduction by A. D. P. Briggs notices Pushkin's use of "swearwords in `The Waggon of Life'," (p. xix) which Briggs called, "language unusable until recent times in both Russia and England." (p. xvii). Anything that I might say about such language might be considered totally off the subject here, but a revisionist view of the relationship between poetry and philosophy might make some personal comments appropriate here.
As author of the unpublished, unedited, and largely unwritten MY VIETNAM WAR JOKE BOOK, any claim that I might make to knowledge of philosophy is highly suspect, similarly to the status achieved by Martin Heidegger when he is considered the Nazi philosopher. In my case, the must dubious aspect of convergence might be expressed by using the phrase *peace with honor* instead of any swearword that might appear. This could be catastrophic for the poetic values involved, but purely for philosophical reasons, I would like to insert *peace with honor* in place of the swearwords in Pushkin's poem, "The Waggon of Life." The second and third stanza become:
We climb aboard the boards at dawn
Full of wild devilment and crowing;
Spurning the lanquid life with scorn,
We cry, `Go on, get *peace with honor* going!'
But by midday we've lost that boldness,
Feeling the wagon shake and judder.
Dread are the heights and dizzy gorges,
We cry, `Slow down you silly *peace with honor*!'

Teachers- Responsive Classroom must have...unless

The activities in this book are great for elementary teachers to use as movement breaks or for during Morning Meeting (Responsive Classroom).

Pros:
-Lots of activities to choose from
-The activities work as explained- they help energize/refresh students
-Most are very quick to do, so they won't take up too much instructional time

Cons:
-Activities vary in length and difficulty, so many may not apply to certain grades or may take too long
-If you own several other Responsive Classroom books, you may already know/have many of these activities- There may not be much new here for you.

Overall:
-Buy it without a doubt if you don't already own any other Responsive Classroom books. If you own other activity/greetings books, you may be disappointed that this won't offer you too much that is new.

This is a really scaled down version, I have a better suggestion

Purchased this book, returned it immediately after reading it. It's for little kids only and the activities in there are things you could make up on your own, not very creative or useful, and are twists on things that parents and/or teachers probably already know.

A MUCH better alternative for a much wider range of ages is "Energize!" by Carol Apacki.

This investigation provides a traditional textual analysis of Duas Caras (2007-2008), a watershed telenovela for two main reasons: It was the first of its kind to present audiences with an Afro-Brazilian as the main hero, openly addressing race matters through plot and dialogue. Additionally, for the first time in the history of Brazilian television, the author of Duas Caras kept a web blog where he discussed the public's reactions to the storylines, media discussions pertaining to the characters and plot, and directly engaged with fans and critics of the program.

Joyce combines her investigation of Duas Caras with a study of related media in order to demonstrate how the program introduced novel ideas about race and also offered a forum where varying perspectives on race, class, and racial relations in Brazil could be discussed. Brazilian Telenovelas is not a reception study in the traditional sense, it is not a story of entertainment-education in the strict sense, and it is not solely a textual analysis. The Classic Book On Selling By The Established Sales Training Master

I got my first copy of How To Master The Art Of Selling in 1981. At the time, I was doing well, selling vacuum cleaners in people’s homes. I remember buying the book in a bookstore (remember those?) and reading it over a long weekend.

The book changed everything about how I sold. Sure, I knew some closes, I had a way to prospect, and I knew how to demonstrate my product. But this is the first time I was seeing all this written down in a comprehensive book. A serious study of the techniques of selling. The book drew me in…I was engaged.

There have been several editions of this book. I was reading the first edition, in hardback. But the newest edition is the 2005 version. There are updates, and so I’m going to review the 2005 version.

Hopkins gives a short introduction about the profession of selling; Why it’s a great and honorable profession, and the advantages of seeking out a career in sales.

A large chunk of the book is invested, wisely I think, in asking questions. Some of this is Qualifying. And I have to admit, this is where the book helped me the most. What questions do you ask to make sure that you are talking to the right person. What questions do you ask to make sure that they have the money…and the ability to buy…before you even start your presentation. The technique of “Bracketing up for money” I took directly from the first edition of the book, used it word for word, and I saw a huge jump in my closing percentage.

He spends time on “Tie Downs”, which are ends of sentences, that turn the sentence into a question, and gather agreement from the prospect. I’ve used these in my selling, and find that they help hold the prospect’s attention. But if you use them more than a few times, they become obvious and irritating. Just use them in moderation.

There is a section on how to see rejection. This is a series of views on how to see rejection. The work comes from the book Anatomy Of A Salesman by Art Mortell…which is a great book by itself. And I wonder why it isn’t a best seller. It takes the fear out of prospecting. It also helps overcome the fear of rejection. The techniques in this section work. I’ve used them in my own life, and they helped me get over my fear of rejection.

The section on non-referral prospecting is revealing. There are several places to find perfectly good prospect, before you ever ask for referrals. These sources are covered nicely in the book.

The real strength of this book are the sections of types of questions, that lead to a close, and the closing questions themselves. Although I don’t use these in their presented form, you can learn a lot by reading the questions, and knowing why you should ask them. I won’t spoil it here, but the closes presented are strong stuff. This is old school closing, from a master of the craft.

The section on referrals is weak, but I imagine it’s because the author wants to appeal to salespeople in every field, and so he leaves out techniques that are only going to apply to a few businesses.

Do I use these techniques today? Not so much. My selling is pretty advanced, and my prospecting method makes the selling pretty easy. But for salespeople who haven’t taken serious sales training? This book is a goldmine. And everything taught in the book works.

I remember the end of that weekend in 1981. That week, I put what I learned to use, and saw my sales increase dramatically. Buy then I was already doing much of what was in the book. But the book taught me why I was doing it, and it helped me polish my methodology. And a few techniques, I learned for the first time, right from the book, and used them as is for a few decades.

A must for any sales person’s library. This is a book you study.

The only book on sales you will need!

I'm a Realtor and had heard about this book while reading a book on guerrilla marketing. I was hooked from the start.

The techniques are practical and if put to use and practiced I don't see why anyone can't succeed in any sales arena. I've committed mastering one technique at a time as I'm new to real estate but not to sales at all. Tom also recommends reading this book once a year. I will definitely do that to pick up on things I may have missed.

Anyone serious about mastering and being successful in sales? I highly recommend.

An excellent example of how to sell

Securing major sales requires forming connections with every prospect. I’ve read lots of books about sales habits and techniques, but had never found one which dealt with these broader challenges around sales without tilting either to mindless optimism or anti-capitalist despair. Of all the activities in business, sales is the one which forces us to confront who we are and what we are willing to do for money. emphasizes the need to ask questions and understand the prospect’s needs, then to use that information to present the benefits that will catch the buyer’s interest. Hopkins places constant emphasis is on prepared presentations, conscientiously planned. He analyzes basic needs, how to know product and prospect, who to sell, what to sell and what to tell; he lays out a program for a positive approach, ways in which to give a verbal picture, and how to stay away from argument and bluffing. With that said, Hopkins defines the most desirable attributes of the salesman; personal enthusiasm, self-confidence, understanding of people, belief in his product, and he concludes by outlining some approaches which apply to any sales problem. Nuff said.

The only peer-reviewed diet known to reverse coronary disease

My husband and I used to eat relatively healthy. Bio-markets, occasionally vegan soups, we even bought an omega juicer. His cholesterol was hovering around 200 and below, LDL at about 100, and blood pressure was slightly high (135/85 or around that number.) We are in our 40s, athletic, no family history of heart disease, non-smokers. It was a shock to us when he started having chest pains, and was told he had 80% LAD blockage. The doctor was clearly not very tactful in the cath lab when he told me that it was called "the widowmaker." So he got a stent, started taking statins and anti-platelet, and we switched to Dr. Ornish (or Caldwell, or Esselstyn, or Pritkin... there are several proponents of similar plans with slight variations) diet. I got all the books and the recipes, and started the diet with him, since I cannot scarf down burgers while he eats carrots.

Two months later, I can see the following results:
His weight went from 175 to 155 lbs. Mine from 136 to 120. Before the diet I was trying to lose 5 lbs, to get to my happy weight of 130. The scale did not budge. Now, if I don't eat I keep losing weight, so I have to eat a lot, and often. His cholesterol went from 197 to 90, with an LDL of 20. That's not even human, in my opinion. Now he does take Lipitor (40 mg), so I am his "control group," since I take no medication. Mine went from 187 to 150, and LDL from 102 to 70. We asked the cardiologist whether he recommends this diet. He said yes, sure, if you can do it. He'd rather have people take their statins though, since the diet is so restrictive that few people stick with it long term. My husband's blood pressure went from 135/85 to 116/70, or something around there. We have a blood pressure machine now, so I can tell. (Can you tell I am doing this very scientifically.) I read all the articles I could find on pubmed.com and decided to supplement with B12 and Fish Oil of some high quality. The cardiologist said the fish oil makes no difference, but for now we take it. We also take Cardioviva, a probiotic which might have some benefits. It can't hurt anyway. We started eating fish a few weeks back, grilled or steamed, about twice a week, so we might stop the fish oil. That is the only concession we make to the diet.

Is it hard? Yes, it is, especially since I am doing it just to support him. Can it be done? Absolutely. It only depends how scared you are, and how strong is your motivation. We exercised before, so we keep that up. I'd say the first three weeks were the worst, your body just can't figure where did all the dietary fat go. Then you adjust, and things that you took for granted start to taste amazing, especially the forbidden ones. I can tell immediately if something has peanuts, because I can TASTE THEM! But I cannot eat them, not part of the diet. There is a direct correlation between your LDL and the number of coronary and cardiac incidents. Below 50 LDL, none. So that's where we try to keep it, and I worry of course about the stent, and the anti-platelet medication, and about an asteroid hitting the Earth someday. That's just me. But the diet works, I feel healthier than ever, I can wear skirts I had stashed away 20 years ago (I found one in a box) and all my... mmm... systems work really well. We miss cheese, lobster rolls, fried clams, oysters... but you get used to it, and when you look at the benefits I think it is worth it. If we make it to 75, maybe we will stop and start eating whatever.

Life saver!!!

This book saved my life! I was on both long lasting nitro and under the tongue nitro to stop my angina. Now I don't use either one. Three days after starting this diet I stopped having chest pain.....3 DAYS!!!! This book is a life saver!!!

The best book ever for Heart Patients.

One of the greatest books ever written for heart patients. I have given many copies to friends. I only hope that they will read the book and take Dr. Ornish's advice. I understand that his book has received very wide acceptance in the medical community and Medicare will allow people who use his program under the care of professionals can charge the cost to Medicare.
That is a great endorsement!
