Absolutely Essential for Professionals

This book may be a little difficult for any professional male to read publicly. I worry that by being seen with it, others will think that I have sexual issues working with females. However, if we as men are honest, most of us do have issues to some degree or another viewing attractive women that we mentor, supervise, treat, or have some other power differential. I think that men have a lot of shame and secrecy about this, which adds to the problem. Some of the natural fantasy that men have may not even be unhealthy, though certainly acting on this is. Unfortunately, the stigma against even mentioning that there is a problem is so great, this is often not even discussed
That being said, the "forbidden zone" relationships that men have with women can be powerful, provided that sexual and professional boundaries are maintained. This book does an incredibly good job of elucidating the problems that potentially and do arise, much of the insight to why this occurs, along with methods for dealing with it. As importantly, it stresses the reasons of maintaining appropriate relationships. I really feel that this book should be read by more men, particularly in professional roles, but good for all men who interact with women at all. Not being a woman, I don't know if it is particularly useful for women to read this. I'm not sure that the problems laid out in this book could be reciprocally true for women by switching the genders in the book. I wouldn't discourage any woman from reading, I simply don't know if there is any relevance.
I will say that since this book was written in the mid to late 80's, some of the culture has changed. Most notably that men are less apt to get away with inappropriate sexual relationships. However, that is not entirely different today. Other than that, this book is hauntingly current in its intuition and recommendations. Who knows, maybe this is a topic that has and will change but little as long as men are attracted to women.
