Clear, Concise, Christ Exalting, Worship Inspiring

What the Old Testament Authors Really Cared About is an Old Testament Survey like no other. It is clear in its presentation, providing concise summaries and guidance regarding the nature and message of each book of the OT, as well as the message of the OT as a whole. Derouchie also labors to do more than simply tip his hat to the traditional Hebrew ordering of scripture. He believes and labors to show that reading the Bible the way Jesus would have read it actually has an impact on how we read the text. Jason Derouchie is a Scholar who is passionate about making much of Jesus Christ, and every chapter moves in this direction. Perhaps one of the best things about this Survey is its versatility. The material in its pages is accessible to Beginning Seminary students, College students and High School students alike. Its illustrations, figures, charts, and pictures are both tasteful and helpful. I plan to use this book in both in my future pastoral ministry and in homeschooling my children. Five Stars!

A Worshipful yet Academic OT Survey!

The title of my review does not make much sense...

When you have a quality academic resource, it can tend to be divorced from the heart. On the other hand, many books that are very focused on worship and love for God are devoid of much academic substance and meat. I have read a good bit of surveys and never have I read anything like this. Dr. DeRouchie opens up the text in ways I have never seen but he also invites me to worship Christ. He takes this book from a different angle. Many OT commentators will say that you must read the OT with the mind of a Jew. You must read it without knowing what you know in the NT lest you miss what the original author intended and miss a purer reading of the Text. DeRouchie flips this on it's head and invites you walk with Jesus on the road of Emmaus and allows Jesus to open up the OT to you (Luke 24). For all things in the OT ultimately point to Christ. This book teaches you not to read Christ into every verse, for that would be Hermeneutically irresponsible. But he teaches you to read the OT with which finds it's ultimately fulfillment and end in Christ (Christo-telic). Jason works hard to focus on only essential technical details and hone in on the biblical theology. He has also assembled an amazing cast of heavy weight OT scholars that make this book a go-to book for the OT!

I can give no higher praise

For someone who has struggled engaging the Old Testament, this book was a precious gift to say the least. God used this tool to open up the OT narrative, ushering me into a new world of worship as the wardrobe did the Pevensie children. The book itself is a work of art, with pictures and colorful displays that have a synergistic effect as they are coupled with the superb content. Bottom line: I love Jesus and people more because of this text- I can give no higher praise.

About the Author
Stephen Jenner has 25 years experience in finance and programme management roles in the public sector including as a member of the Senior Civil Service since 1999. From 2005-08 he headed the CJS IT portfolio, a £2bn investment in modernising justice. The approach adopted won the 2007 Civil Service Financial Management award and has been recognised internationally in reports to the European Commission, the OECD and in a short case study by Gartner. More recently he has participated in the development of Portfolio Management as part of the Cabinet Office's ICT strategy and he co-ordinates the cross-government Project Portfolio Management Special Interest Group as well as playing a leading role in the development of OGC guidance in this area.

Fazil Iskander�was born in 1929, in�Sukhumi, in the Soviet Union. He is the author of�many stories, novels, and novellas, including The�Goatibex Constellation and Sandro of Chegem. In�2010 he was awarded the Russian Order of Merit�for the Fatherland. He lives in Moscow.

Great satire from one of the best Soviet writers

The subject of this satire--a harebrained scheme to boost Soviet agricultural production by creating a hardier breed of goat--may seem dated, but the humor is timeless. Fazil Iskander is a wonderful writer who has never achieved the readership he deserves in the West. His stories are most interesting when they focus on the culture of his native Abkhazia, a former province of the Soviet Republic of Georgia. As Iskander portrays it, Abkhazia was a fairy-tale land where bandits flourished and blood-feuds between rival clans played out in the mountains overlooking the Black Sea, until the Bolveshiks subdued it and imposed their own sterile conformity. Iskander did most of his important writing before Glasnost, when he earned his keep as a member of the Soviet Writers Union, so he disguises his satire of the Soviet system as a wistful nostalgia about the withering of traditional life in the face of modernity. His stories are all the sadder now that Abkhazia has fallen on even harder times following the collapse of the Soviet Union: after a short but bloody war of independence against Georgia in the early 1990's, Abkhazia won de facto autonomy, but has since become a haven for drug lords and marauding bands of Chechen fighters who drift back and forth across its borders. The colorful way of life of the Abkhaz may exist nowhere now but in the fond remembrances of Fazil Iskander.

Very good book - with interesting history of MC Drag Racing

Drag racing seems to be a place of great inovation and creative engineering. I especially liked the quotes from some of the pioneers in the sport and the early days when rules were slack and speeds went up. Rev on the redline...!

Absorbing and Totally Fascinating

You cannot help but notice John's obsession with drag racing as you read this book. Through meticulous research and dozens of personal interviews, this book is the first truly comprehensive history of drag racing. I hold a high bar for motorcycle books since reading several by Allan Girdler on Harleys (XR-750 and Harley-Davidson Racing, 1934-1986 are likely of your interest). I found this beautiful book authentic and special. If you are looking for great historical content from the early days to present and drool-worthy photos, this is an awesome book for you.
