For each class of models, the text describes the three fundamental cornerstones: representation, inference, and learning, presenting both basic concepts and advanced techniques. Finally, the book considers the use of the proposed framework for causal reasoning and decision making under uncertainty. The main text in each chapter provides the detailed technical development of the key ideas. Most chapters also include boxes with additional material: skill boxes, which describe techniques; case study boxes, which discuss empirical cases related to the approach described in the text, including applications in computer vision, robotics, natural language understanding, and computational biology; and concept boxes, which present significant concepts drawn from the material in the chapter. Instructors (and readers) can group chapters in various combinations, from core topics to more technically advanced material, to suit their particular needs.

Probably the best book for the topic, hard to read with Kindle app on Ipad

If you're trying to learn probabilistic graphical models on your own, this is the best book you can buy.
The introduction to fundamental probabilistic concepts is better than most probability books out there and the rest of the book has the same quality and in-depth approach. References, discussions and examples are all chosen so that you can take this book as the centre of your learning and make a jump to more detailed treatment of any topic using other resources.

Another huge plus is Professor Daphne Koller's online course material. Her course for probabilistic models is available online, and watching the videos alongside the book really helps sometimes.

If you have a strong mathematical background, you may find the book a little bit too pedagogic for your taste, but if you're looking for a single resource to learn the topic on your own, then this book is what you need.

The only problem with it is that it is a big book to carry around, and if you buy the Kindle edition for the iPad, you'll have to zoom into pages to read comfortably(or maybe I have bad eye sight), and Kindle app on iPad does not keep the zoom level across pages. So my experience is, zoom, pan, read, change page, zoom, pan, go back to previous page to see something, zoom, pan... You get the idea. I'd gladly pay more for a pdf version which I could read with other software on the iPad. Even though my reading experience has been a bit unpleasant due to Kindle app, the book deserves five stars, since it is the content that matters.

Brilliant Tome on Graphical Representation, Reasoning and Machine Learning

Stanford professor, Daphne Koller, and her co-author, Professor Nir Friedman, employed graphical models to motivate thoroughgoing explorations of representation, inference and learning in both Bayesian networks and Markov networks. They do their own bidding at the book's web page, [...], by giving readers a panoramic view of the book in an introductory chapter and a Table of Contents. On the same page, there is a link to an extensive Errata file which lists all the known errors and corrections made in subsequent printings of the book - all the corrections had been incorporated into the copy I have. The authors painstakingly provided necessary background materials from both probability theory and graph theory in the second chapter. Furthermore, in an Appendix, more tutorials are offered on information theory, algorithms and combinatorial optimization. This book is an authoritative extension of Professor Judea Pearl's seminal work on developing the Bayesian Networks framework for causal reasoning and decision making under uncertainty. Before this book was published, I sent an e-mail to Professor Koller requesting some clarification of her paper on object-oriented Bayesian networks; she was most generous in writing an elaborate reply with deliberate speed.

I bought this book to use for the Coursera course on PGM taught by the author. It was essential to being able to follow the course. I would not say that it is an easy book to pick up and learn from. It was a good reference to use to get more details on the topics covered in the lectures.

A larger view, however, is achieved in small steps. We are not hoping for a big revelation but for a few small aha! moments. It simply takes time to put together the grand puzzle of linear algebra. You will get there, and the point, as the cliche goes, is to enjoy the ride.

Clear. Accessible. Commanding.

In an age where mathematics textbooks seem to only grow more and more convoluted in their approach to and explanation of foundational topics such as Linear Algebra, Dr. Grinfeld's writing is a breath of fresh air.

I had the privilege of learning Linear Algebra from Dr. Grinfeld firsthand. His love for the subject is readily apparent in his quality of teaching as well as his ability to effectively communicate a deep understanding of Linear Algebra in an accessible manner.

I am pleased to discover that the same quality of teaching found in his classroom can be obtained in this book (at a much more competitive price too!). For anyone who cares about knowing a subject through and through or simply desires a deeper grasp of Linear Algebra I can offer no better place to turn to than this book. Read it to learn. Read it to test your understanding. Read it to refresh your understanding.

Useful tool for anyone in a math class involving linear algebra

The guide is short and to the point, and reviews in an intuitive way the concepts of linear algebra. Since it's such a short read and provides examples that allow the student to develop an instinctive sense for solving common problems, I would recommend it as a companion to any new student in a linear algebra class, as well as anyone looking to review the basics of the subject.

The exercises are simple enough to teach the basics, and the more challenging problems and explanations are thought provoking enough to develop mastery of the subject - adequately preparing the reader for tough extra credit problems to be faced on an exam.

This is the first English translation of the 'Chronicle of Prussia', which was written by Nicolaus von Jeroschin, in middle German verse, during the period from 1330 to 1341. It is a history of the Teutonic Knights, encompassing the period between the foundation of the order, in 1190, and 1331. The translator's introduction sets the work in its historical and cultural context. The text was written at the instigation of the Grand Master of the Teutonic Order, to make an account of the ethos and history of the order's conquest of Prussia available 'to all German people'. Its purpose was to remind the order's knight brothers and its supporters of its origins and past achievements, but above all it was intended to establish the legitimacy of Prussia as a locus for crusades, setting the scene for the order's 'golden age' in the second half of the fourteenth century. The chronicle's content is divided into three sections: it opens with a description of the founding of the order in Acre. There follows a discourse on the nature of spiritual and earthly warfare, which echoes the ideology of crusading warfare first articulated by Bernhard of Clairvaux in his treatise De laude novae militiae. The final, longest, section recounts the wars of the Teutonic Knights against the Prussians and Lithuanians from 1230 until the narrative breaks off abruptly in 1331. The chronicle is the main historical source document for the period it covers and was widely disseminated during the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. It is also an engaging and lively account of warfare and colonisation on the eastern frontier of Latin Christianity.

Faithful and Compelling Translation of a Piece which Cuts to the Heart of Crusading in Northern Europe

Bottom Line: Invaluable primary source translation of the northern European crusades.

Mary Fischer's translation of Nicholaus von Jeroschin "Chronicle of Prussia" fills in a large hole among primary English translated source material regarding the Crusades of northern Europe and the Teutonic Knights. The choice of Jeroschin's chronicle is well considered, too; Jeroschin's work covered the whole expanse of the first century of Teutonic conquest and presence in the Baltic up until his own time, in the early forteenth century. Writing with relative closeness with regards as to when the events occurred, he has a unique status of relating individual ancedotes and describing events in both a tone and a level of detail that would not be available to later chroniclers of the Teutonic Order, when the struggle with the Lithuanians and Poles dominated the focus of the Teutonic Knights.

Highly recommended for study. Readers of William Urban's work or other English language historians of the northern Crusades, such as Eric Christiansen, will more than appreciate this translation as a means of grounding secondary source analysis and discussion with a primary source text.

The manual only contains solutions to ODD-numbered problems, which is totally NOT stated on the book title. This misleads buyers. While the manual gives good, detailed solutions to odd problems, harder problems from the book happen to be even. On average, this solution manual is almost useless.

We struggle every day trying to make ends meet, in a world that ain’t got a whole lot of love for us. We do what we can when we can in hopes of a better tomorrow, that never seems to come. We do what we have to in order to get the things we need, for ourselves, as well as our loved ones. Whether you hustle, pimp, whore, or pull heist, I feel you. It's all in the name of survival. I feel you because I am you. The endangered species. The young black man. Whether this book sells one copy or one million, it is what it is, only god can dictate fate. But if I can help somebody by putting my thoughts to paper, then I’ve accomplished something. To those who came up under me, peep-game. This book was one of the greatest books I have read in 2003. I mean I read it in like 2 days. I say this I hope a movie will be made from this book. K'wan is a truly talented blessed brother who tells the whole story. I have lent this book to several people and they are like damn, damn, damn.....I would advise anyone to read this u won't be sorry. I love kwan, unfortunately I've read this book long ago when it was published as gangland so I thought gangster was something new, if you haven't read this one I suggest you do so as all kwans books are worth it

This book was incredible. On the streets of Harlem there is a very bloody rivalry between the Crips & Bloods. St. Louis "Lou Loc" Alexander and Kenyatta "Gutter" Soladine are Crips gang members originally from Los Angeles, California but moves to Harlem after the murder of a dirty detective went wrong. Lou Loc wants to leave the gang life and concentrate on his passion of writing. He meets the beautiful and smart Satin Angelino who support his new input on his life. But there are circumstances that wants to see him fail. Gutter lives and breathes being a Crip. He wants to be the next kingpin but when he put into a coma following a shooting his future seems bleak. El Diablo, a Bloods leader, has return to Harlem after running from a murder charge to find the Crips are taking over. He also find his beloved sister has fell in love with a rival gang member.
