Common Sense

Nice little book - easy to read and digest. However, Paul's videos on Youtube are much, much better. He has a great personality and a witty presentation style. I think I liked the book because I read it after listening to Paul, so I "heard" his voice come through. There's some succinct, practical advice here.

5 Stars Guys? Really?

I've always depended on the reviews from fellow Amazon readers, and it's guided me to some great books I'd have otherwise not read. This, unfortunately, is one of those "how-the-hell-did-this-get-5-stars" situations that has driven me to write a review (something I would typically not do).

The story is relatively sound, and in the world of martial fantasy, certainly good enough for a casual read and peaked my interest. The writing, however, is largely terrible. Nightblade reads like a second draft rushed to publishing. The flow is constantly, consistently spoiled by repetitive language, repetitive paragraph structure, and some just downright ****y sentence structure. For example:

"The man lived and breathed swordsmanship because from the man's glances Orochi could tell he was about to ask about Orochi's blade"

That is a horrible sentence. It's awkward, garbled, and manages to use the name Orochi twice in short order. Likewise, there have been several instances of back-to-back paragraphs stating the same thing in slightly different ways. Use of the word "kingdom" in three consecutive sentences, the staggering amount of times the world "cycles" appears in this book, etc.

The potential is there, certainly, and I imagine I may enjoy the second book in the trilogy much more if I can bring myself to read it. I've only made it to about 80% of the way through Nightblade by aggressive skipping of paragraphs and pages when the writing gets under my skin. Perhaps I've just been spoiled by the likes of Will Wight, Jim Butcher, Pierce Brown, Robin Hobb and Scott Lynch (to name a few).

If you're not the type of person to be bothered those sorts of grammatical and structural issues, you'll probably really enjoy the book. If you're like me and find the experience easily ruined by clumsy turn of phrase, then skip this one. While I appreciate the enthusiasm of the book's fans, I have a very hard time understanding how this is a 5-star-near-perfect effort.

Dark, gripping and beautifully written

From the first chapter, this book was dark, gripping and beautifully written. Ryuu, a young boy, is orphaned in a tragic bandit attack, but is rescued by a strange warrior named Shigeru. Shigeru adopts Ryuu and raises him, training him in combat and to use "the sense." Meanwhile, there are two other concurrent storylines unfolding, as well. Takako is a beautiful young girl who is sold into a brothel by her father. Moriko is a bright young girl who is taken away from her family to be raised in an abbey when a monk discovers her ability to use "the sense." Eventually, the paths of the three will cross and the consequences of their actions will change their entire nation.
The author doesn't waste time world-building, but before you know it, you are swept up in the world of warriors, monks, courtesans and the dangerous "nightblades" and "dayblades" I love that Ryuu is such a believable character - he is young, impatient and can act just like a regular kid. At the same time, you can see him growing into a hero who is going to play a pivotal role in his world. I also really like that Moriko is such a strong female character and I can't wait to see what happens to her and Ryuu in the next book!

Very good, but not great

The book is set in Japanese-like fantasy world, where sensing(magic) is tightly controlled by nonreligious temples. This a coming of age assassins story with focus on character development and the author manages to create very believable characters with flaws, emotion and codes of honor.

My cons are:

The childhood of the character does suspend my belief due how adult they act. This resolves it self as they grow older.

For how much emphasis that is put on the fighting abilities of characters in book, the climatic fights are over very quickly and without much detail.

I am not at stickler for sentence structure and punctuation (English is my second language) and normally I don't even notice most mistakes, but there were a few times I had to reread part many times before I was clear on what the author was saying.

All in all a book I enjoyed reading but probably won't reread.
A really good choice if you enjoy a character driven story where the character have strong codes of honor

Bravo, two thumbs up!

I haven't been to a performance of this play, but I read the script after my son was required to read it for a college course. I think Deborah Brevoort has done an outstanding job of making important statements about human suffering and healing. I don't think this play was intended to study terrorism, but makes deep resonating observations about loss and grief/suffering, which are universal. I think she also makes points about how we can be so entrenched in our own losses that we fail to recognize the suffering of others. The resolution in this work revolves around a type of unplanned sharing...acts of kindness which produce a type of solidarity and aid the healing of both the "givers" and the "receivers." I think there is a great perception on the part of the author regarding several aspects of human nature/the human psyche. In my (humble) opinion, there is a spiritual side to this play which is never overtly stated, but inherent in the choice of material and its treatment. Ms. Brevoort is to be commended. I personally think she could well have written a short story or novella and reached a wider audience. It must be a powerful play when it is performed well, but will probably never get the attention it deserves. Bravo, Ms. Brevoort, you get two thumbs up from me!

Falling in Love with Brevoort

A friend recommended this author to me, and since reading this script, I have read as many more of hers as I can get my hands on. This is a lovely piece, written in a poetic style that compliments the subject matter. Brevoort is a restrained and intelligent writer, and this is a fantastic piece for theatres looking for a female-centric script. By the end I was bawling. It's lovely. It's moving. It should be produced more. I also really recommend her "Signs of Life", though you may have to order it through the Samuel French catalogue, which is really the only other place I've been able to track down her scripts. They're more expensive than on Amazon, unfortunately.

JOHN H. SEINFELD, PHD, is Louis E. Nohl Professor at the California Institute of Technology. Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics contains more than you ever want to know about the workings of the atmosphere

I purchased this textbook for a class on Atmospheric Processes. It goes into far more depth than I ever imagined, and you probably wouldn't see half of this material until quite a ways into your graduate degree in atmospheric science. That being said, it is absolutely comprehensive - there probably isn't a single thing you couldn't find somewhere in its pages.

An Exceptional Text book and Example of applied Chemical Engineering

I stumbled on this book at my public library. As a BS Chemical Engineer with 38 years of practice in the petroleum industry (including many years of work on air pollution,) I find this book to be a WONDERFUL CONCISE DIGEST of what it took me many years to try to find out on my own. The writing is clear, the use of Tables and Charts greatly helps in cementing the understanding of complex issues. I know of no other book which has the breadth of scope, the level of detail and the rigid application of good engineering practice to this evolving field.
I only hope that the second edition (2006) is followed up with a third edition to bring us up to date on the remarkable progress made in the past 10 or so years.

Content is great, quality of binding is awful

This is the standard book for any atmospheric chemist. I often use it daily to reference fundamental equations. The biggest problem with this edition of the book is that it falls apart. After having used it for one quarter it began to fall apart and now it is in several pieces. I would expect better from a textbook publisher. Since it is falling apart, it is harder to use. I have several other colleagues with the same problem, however, those that purchased the first edition still have a book that is intact. Consider getting the first edition or writing the publisher to tell them about the poor quality of the second edition binding.

Much room for improvement

Mixed feeling on this book. Some chapters are wonderfully written and quite insightful. Other ones get lost on technicalities and fail to produce any interesting point. Overall it is unsure whether it treats the subject (brand mascots) comercially or as an academic paper. I confess I had higher expectations.

Excellent analysis of the stock market with lots of truth and humor. Don't be fooled by the 1940 copyright; investing hasn't changed much since then! I learned about this book streaming the 2016 Berkshire-Hathaway Annual Meeting when Warren Buffett commented this book was one of the best books about the stock market.

Wisdom Wrapped in Whimsy

Put down that ugly brokerage statement from the busted, dot-gone Bear market. Skip that news report of the latest bankruptcy filing and spend a couple of whimsical hours with author Fred Schwed, Jr. WHERE ARE THE CUSTOMERS' YACHTS? is a rejoinder to Wall Street's inflated self-confidence that begins with that classic question. Schwed's conversational style makes this a quick read. His style is 'wry', 'dead-pan', 'droll' - a bit of Andy Rooney, maybe a bit of 18th Century novelist Lawrence Sterne. Schwed looks back to the 1920's (published 1940, republished 1955) as "one of the great universal delusions of history" a period of "supreme miscalculation". It was a kind of grand "nonsense" we can relate to in our own post-internet bubble period. Schwed is more humorist than moralist. Misdoings on Wall Street are "overrated" often a mix of "bad luck and bad brains". Advisors are "romantics" who genuinely believe that the market's movements can be predicted. Often they become victims of their own "confused sincerity". Technical analysts are "pathetic", persuading themselves of predictive patterns in stock charts and statistical data. In the end market activity may repeat itself, but often "ponderously, with an infinite number of variations." Schwed takes the side of short sellers, an unpopular bunch who weigh against the general herd to profit when the market declines. He notes that such professional cynicism is never tolerated in an un-free society. Years before the Wall Street Journal began 'testing' the efficient market theory (EMT) selecting stocks with darts, Schwed relates the apocryphal story of a bank trust officer's relative success selecting stocks from his pen's random ink spots. In a timeless passage, Schwed summarizes his investment program: "When there is a stock-market boom, and everyone is scrambling for common stocks, take all your common stocks and sell them. Take the proceeds and buy conservative bonds...just wait for the depression...sell out the bonds...and buy back the stocks....Continue to repeat this operation as long as you live, and you'll have the pleasure of dying rich." Who can argue with a contrarian strategy that would have worked wonderfully in recent years.

Great book but hard to find a used copy that ...

Great book but hard to find a used copy that hasn't lost the 3.5 inch floppy disk with the sample MIDI files. And even if the disk is included, who still has a computer with a 3.5 inch floppy disk drive? I sure don't, so I had to take my diskette in to the local computer repair place and have them burn the data onto a CD for me. What do you do if you get a copy of the book without the disk or if you're unable to read the data because your computer can't handle a 3.5 inch floppy disk? Simple. Contact me and I will promptly email the MIDI files to you, no charge, good karma and all that, one musician to another. How To Improve Your MIDi Files!

I've made a large number of midi files via the trial and error method and used them regularly in live performances. But, until now, I could not find a good book telling me how to make better, more professional, midi's. Some "midi manuals" gave a few tips, but were mostly devoted to a general overview of midi music. The Midi Files gives an excellent intro to basic midi knowledge, but it then goes on to provide a wealth of practical information on how to actually produce better files. Be sure you get a copy with the floppy disk that comes with the book. It has dozens of examples of how the techniques sound when properly applied. The book references the floppy's examples and is just a great tool to get you producing better files, starting with the channel headers and going right through the various techniques to the final entries on the channels. If, like me, you are someone with a little bit of knowledge looking for clear assistance on how to make better files, this is the best book I have found to date (November 2008). This is the only book I have found with this range and depth of practical advice, examples, and background explanation. I almost let the 1996 copyright date throw me off but I am glad I didn't because this is a far better book than the books I have purchased that were printed in 2005 and 2007. Scott.

I just wanted to say thank you. Thank you for publishing this book, "The Midi Files", by Rob Young. I'm just past 40 years of age. I've been working with computers my whole life. I've been a musician longer than that. But I only recently took the plunge into Midi. And it was hopeless. I couldn't make head or tails out of the documentation that came with either the synthesiser or the sequencer. I have always been able to pick things up on my own, with the help of the manuals. It wasn't happening. I was really getting down about it.
But then I remembered I'd bought this book.And man, what a book.It is such a good book I can hardly believe it. It really saved my life. Not only does Mr. Young show a great understanding, technically, of the MIDI standard and its various interpretations in hardware and software, and of the pitfalls that we new MIDI exploresrs will be faced with. But he does it all with such amazing musical sense too.
So I don't know what else to say. Thanks. From my heart. This foray into the MIDI world really means alot to me. I've been thinking about it and planning on it for a long time. I've been needing and wanting to get back to music, especial composition, and this was how I was going to do it. When I finally went for it, and then it was going so badly, I was really down on myself. I felt stupid. I thought maybe I was too old for this. But then this book, this one simple book, changed everything. It finally helped me to unlock the door. I still have a long way to go. But at least I'm developing. I'm so appreciative, it's hard to express it. But I hope I have done so, in some small way.

About the Author
Norman F. Johnson is a professor of biology at Ohio State University and curator of the Ohio State University insect collection. His research interests include the systematics of parasitic Hymenoptera and in particular the Proctotrupoidea. His focus to date has been on the Scelionidae, a speciose group important as biological control agents of their hosts. In 1992 he assumed the position of director of the OSU Insect Collection.

Charles A. Triplehorn is emeritus faculty at Ohio State University and his broad interests include systematics and biogeography of Coleoptera. His research is primarily on the large family Tenebrionidae, especially those of the Western Hemisphere. Since his retirement from Ohio State in 1992, he has concentrated on two major projects: a revision of the genus Eleodes and of the Neotropical Diaperini. Triplehorn is the former president of the American Entomological Society.

Important for both biologists and non-biologists

Everything about insects is fascinating, and this book gives a comprehensive overview of their behavior, anatomy, and classification. For non-experts in entomology, such as this reviewer, the book provides the necessary background for further study. Topics such as the molecular genetics of insects and the genetic engineering of insects are not covered, but there are plenty of other books that treat these topics in detail. Only the first four chapters were read by this reviewer, but only chapter four will be discussed here.

Early on in chapter four, the authors dispel the prejudice that since insects have small nervous systems and have short life spans, they are not automatons and can exhibit a remarkable degree of spontaneity. Insects can adjust to the circumstances of their environment and the organization of their activities can be extremely complex. What is most interesting about their discussion of insect behavior is the emphasis on how it depends on the internal state of the insect, and not only its nervous system but also its internal organs.

The authors view the basic unit of behavior in an insect as being a `reflex'. A receptor that is stimulated will cause a particular group of insects to contract, which is observed as a body movement of the insect. A `releaser' is the stimulus that actually triggers a specific collection of movements. This results in what is called a `fixed-action pattern', which, as the name implies, occurs the same way every time it occurs. To be contrasted with these are the `modal-action patterns' that adapt to changes in the body position of the insect relative to external objects. A `central pattern generator' the authors write, is responsible for the leg and wing movements of insects, and allows them to navigate in noisy environments. All of these considerations of insect behavior are interesting in themselves, but even more so considering that they are being applied to unexpected fields such as artificial intelligence. Indeed, the learning abilities of insects are being emulated in various machines in the last few years, with good success. And even, a new area of artificial intelligence called `swarm intelligence' has arisen that is based on the behavior of ants.

Along these same lines, the authors discuss four categories that he believes are useful in characterizing insect behavior. These categories clarify to a large extent the difference between `preprogrammed' and modified behaviors. The first of these are called `closed instincts', which are fixed programs. The second is more flexible and are called `open instincts', where experience feeds back and changes the program. The third consists of `restricted learning' and is the analog of classical conditioning. The last one is `flexible learning', wherein experience can result in significant changes in the behavior pattern. All of these categories have found expression in machines, as well as the types of learning that the authors believe exists in insects: habituation, and associative, latent, and insight learning. The authors admit though that insight learning, where familiarity with relationships among (neutral) stimuli is obtained, has not been established without controversy in insects. Honey bees though they quote as examples of insects that can engage in insight learning. Very interesting also in this discussion of the behavior of insects is the use of mathematical models. As expected intuitively, these models involve control theory, but even more "exotic" approaches such as optimality theory and dynamic stochastic modeling. Optimality theory is used with the assumption that insects evaluate their state variables and engage in decision-making that optimizes their gain according to some criterion.

Needless to say the learning abilities and behavior of insects is fascinating, and no doubt there are many surprises waiting for future entomologists. Their research efforts will not only assist in the better understanding of the most important representatives of the animal kingdom but they will be immediately used by those who are attempting to emulate this "primitive" intelligence of insects in machines.

HC 864 pgs. 10 1/4" x 8 ¼" x 1 ½" format on semi-glossy media to accommodate hundreds of black & white insect photographs and exacting images & sketches of insects with emphasis on detailed wing venation & discrete anatomical organ structures accompanied by short concise explanatory captions to help decipher the documented systematics. providing a wealth of informative detail on subject's organs photographed. In all, there are 35 chapters, the last devoted to collecting, preserving, and studying insects.

The authors inform us this 7th Edition, "An Introduction to the Study of Insects", was based on prior editions by Borror & Delong's text, used in North America by entomologists and biologists for over 50 years. The authors, both renowned biologists specializing in entomology from Ohio Sate University have greatly added to this compendium by focusing primarily on updating the area of Systematics (nomenclature) that includes the most recent data on insect evolution: - this area of expertise requires keen knowledge of Latin and Greek (for the authors) on nomenclature.

Herein is provided an overview of insect behavior: - a discussion of their anatomy, physiology, & development; an overview of insect systematics, classification, nomenclature & identification, and finally descriptions of insects from the phylum Arthropoda to the Hexapoda and 26 Orders along with the distinguishing characteristics of many, many individual Genus species to be precisely characterized. For the uninitiated student, individual insects identification goes far beyond size, color, shape, and gross markings, but delves into the microscopic anatomy of appendages, mouth & head parts, sexual organs, detailed descriptions of their molting's, metamorphosis, generation frequency, migration, & distribution (ecology). Most recently, DNA studies are being used to determine evolutionary origins.

In the case of Order Lepidoptera (Butterflies & Moths), the various Families within the order uses wing venation as a primary key, and with the myriads of these 4-winged members we are not or should not be surprised to find a plethora of pages of wing venation keys (precise drawings), depicting the individual vasculature all regularly numbered. We might suppose the 2-winged Diptera to be more quickly identified - and perhaps this is often the case.

If you fashion yourself to be a budding or learned entomologist, this is the book for you to have: - too big for a field manual but just right as a desk reference to the bugs, beetles, spiders, flies, ants, etc. Highly recommended.
