Post Grad: Five Women and Their First Year Out of College, by Caroline Kitchener

What really happens in the first year out of college? When Caroline Kitchener graduated from Princeton, she began shadowing four of her female classmates, interviewing them as they started to navigate the murky waters of post-collegiate life. Weaving together her own experience as a writer with the experiences of these other women—a documentarian, a singer, a programmer, and an aspiring doctor—Kitchener delves deeply into the personal and professional opportunities offered to female college graduates, and how the world perceives them.

The five women in this diverse group confront challenges, such as parental estrangement, mental illness, financial anxiety, and heartbreak, all the while tackling their nascent careers and forging their own paths forward. Relationships with their parents warp and strain as they cross into adulthood and negotiate their newfound independence. Romantically, the women cast off in a number of directions, with some exploring nontraditional relationships and others latching onto a single partner for stability in an uncertain world.

Kitchener writes with the fervor of a journalist, the rigor of a sociologist, and the nuance and empathy of a skilled memoirist, and she has crafted a brilliant work of reportage, replete with human characters. Both a broad and an intensely individual exploration, Post Grad is an account of the generation people can’t stop talking about, from one of its own.

Review
’Kitchener, herself a recent Princeton graduate, wants to be a writer — and she has done it. In Post Grad, along with detailing her own struggles, she burrows deep into the lives and psyches of four classmates. Her nonfiction narrative is intimate, compulsively readable and even occasionally shocking.” (Chicago Tribune)

“Kitchener’s book...offer[s] n absorbing and introspective look at the challenges facing young women today as they attempt to find their footing on their own individual paths.” (Booklist)

“And she is, without question, a talented writer. I read Post Grad in a single sitting . . . An engaging book.” (New York Review of Books)

“These women [in Post Grad] defiantly contradict stereotypes, and Caroline does not reduce them to tokens. Post Grad reveals the complicated, painful, funny, messy, sometimes shocking, and entirely human journeys of young women with extraordinary educations.” (Elle)

“Carefully reported, empathetic.” (Time)

“With a strong command of narrative...Kitchener excels at sprinkling the multiple story lines with statistics to add clarity and insight to a truly challenging stage of life. Her book is highly recommended for recent grads stumbling through their newfound independence.” (Publishers Weekly)

“With candor, the author discusses how she and her high-achieving, competitive cohorts adapted to life after the Ivy League, from navigating changing familial bonds to forging new romantic relationships to considering-and reconsidering-career options. As a Millennial...I found it engrossing and (at times a bit too) relatable.” (Library Journal)

“Caroline Kitchener’s Post Grad is a book I wish had been published when I graduated from college and was floundering my way through my first year in the ‘real world.’” (Bustle)

“A must-read book for April.” (Flavorpill)

“Kitchener has the unique ability of being able to verbalize my every thought, feeling, and emotion regarding the experience of joining the ‘real world.’” (The Bi-College News)

“Caroline Kitchener and her Ivy League classmates may not be exactly typical of their generation, but they are certainly entertaining. Post-Grad will challenge many young college graduates to consider a much more diverse range of career paths.” (Anne-Marie Slaughter, President and CEO, New America)

“Writing about a group of young women as they really are--and not as they are imagined by their parents, the media, or themselves--is an enormous challenge... Fascinating, at times disturbing, often moving, and always achingly honest.” (Evan Thomas, author of Being Nixon and Ike's Bluff)

“There’s no prep course for how to cultivate one’s independent identity or how to simultaneously parse parental expectations, personal dreams, and reality’s limitations. Sincere, eloquent, and thorough, Kitchener’s debut is a must read.” (Angela Palm, author of Riverine)

“The creativity and courage at the foundation of these stories is worth a thousand hours of counseling in any college career office. I will be giving this book as a gift to all of my graduating senior advisees.” (Melissa Harris-Perry, author of Sister Citizen)

“Caroline Kitchener’s Post Grad is sharply written and incredibly timely. Now more than ever we need women’s stories to lead the way, and Kitchener does it marvelously.” (Jessica Valenti, author of Sex Object and The Purity Myth)

Refreshingly honest and thoughtfully crafted!
By TJ W-L
Life is difficult to navigate during any transition, especially the first year after of college. There are no "first year out" blueprints or post-collegiate scripts to follow. Although this liminal time is, for many, a season of opportunity and excitement- it is also chock full of uncertainty and anxiety. Vocational discernment, shifting family dynamics, changing friendships, intimate relationships, and establishing new systems of support can be daunting. Surprisingly, few books speak to this pivotal season of life. Fortunately, author Caroline Kitchener recognized this gap, and with stunning clarity and abundant empathy, shares the stories of real young women who make their way post-university life. As a higher education professional mentoring students for over 18 years, I found Kitchener's writing refreshingly honest and thoughtfully crafted. I highly recommend this book for not only university students and recent graduates, but anyone who cares about "emerging adults" and their continued journey of self discovery.

A must-read for all college grads!
By Amazon Customer
As a woman finishing her first full year post-grad (albeit, not at an Ivy institution), I found great solace in the stories of these five women. Caroline Kitchener details their experiences with great compassion, honesty, and insight. Her words jump off the page and hit me somewhere deep in my chest, knowing she is describing not only their experiences but my own.

My only criticism: I wish this book had come out one year sooner! Perhaps that would have spared me from the sleepless nights I spent wondering if anyone felt as lonely or confused as I did. Fortunately, the millions of women graduating this Spring will have Caroline's book to guide them through the turbulence of their first year post-college and to remind them that they are not alone.

I was drawn to read this book from a review in the Wall Street Journal and being a parent of a daughter the same age and circumstance as these women. I was disappointed by the lack of depth and insight in several of these young women transitioning into adulthood - or the 'real world.' I thought I'd pass this book along to my same-age daughter to reassure her that her experiences are shared. But they aren't. She has had to struggle with managing her own expenses from rent that eats considerably into her paycheck, to the loneliness of trying to create a new social circle, to becoming a bit more 'street-smart' to ensure her safety living in a large East Coast city, to truly searching what is her role in the world - how can she make a difference. I was so disappointed in the constant introducing of 'polyamorous' relationships - this is a 'big word' for 'playing the field.' There are so many larger issues to occupy these young women's minds and fuel their growth! The character, Denise, intrigued me as did the author - they were trying to 'grow up' or grow into the new phase of their life. I wish I heard more about Denise's thoughts and reflections - but she was probably so busy her input to the author may have been more limited that the other women. I was hoping I'd read how these young women used this post-grad year as a time to explore and reflect on their place in our world, our communities. We need our young people to go out, make a difference, have an impact, not be trying to make ends meet by escorting older, well- to- do men who pay for companionship or being the #3 or 4 partner in a 'polyamorous' relationship. Find your place by reaching out to your new community in the 'real world': join a synagogue, church, Big Brother/Big Sister, a food bank, tutor at an elementary school or the after school program at the Y or an adult education GED program. Think beyond yourself and your needs. Because Lord knows, there is so much good that needs to be done within each of our own communities. Reach beyond yourself! There are so many opportunities to grow and to make a difference.

INTRODUCTION

Where did it all go? Everything we learned at school now seems a distant memory. We sit slack-jawed when our children ask us which planet comes after Jupiter, or what the capital of Bulgaria is, or what quid pro quo actually means. Have you ever found yourself making up your own version of the Pythagorean theorem in order to avoid the humiliating scorn of your offspring? Have you ever started blithely on a list of the thirteen original colonies only to find yourself stuck at eight? Have you ever succumbed to the temptation to use the embarrassing cop-out clause “Ask your father/mother”?

Even simple queries like “Why is the sky blue?” have many parents scratching their heads. All we can remember is that we used to know the answer. A recent study revealed that even though most pupils learn French for five years, by the time they are adults the sum total of their knowledge stretches to–at best–four words. In these days of highspeed Internet connections and calculators on cell phones, we rarely have to use the information that was drummed into us in our school days. The good news is that it’s still all there. And even better, it’s surprisingly easy to revive those dormant gray cells and hold your head up with pride when you’re next asked to help with homework.

Homework for Grown-ups is a revision guide for adults that will put you back on track. We aim to entertain you as well as exercise your brain and equip you with the basics, so you can impress your friends or handle home work without humiliation.

Homework for Grown-ups is organized into nine chapters, each covering a school subject: English, Mathematics, Home Economics, History, Science, Religious Education, Geography, Classics, and Art. After reading it, we hope you’ll be as sharp as a tack, as bright as a button, and as clever as when you were a fresh-faced youngster in gray socks and a blazer.

Wouldn’t it be great to slip a couple of Latin phrases into a conversation with your boss, or pontificate on the qualities of a tetrahedron at a cocktail party, or name all the presidents in your head while the
dentist is giving you a filling? Homework for Grown-ups is the way to get back your self-respect and also show the kids a thing or two.

Chapter 1:
ENGLISH LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE

“English n. the language of England, now used in
many varieties throughout the world”
Oxford Concise English Dictionary

“For words, like Nature, half reveal
And half conceal the Soul within”
Alfred, Lord Tennyson (1809—92), In Memoriam A. H. H.

Our mother tongue is a rich and flexible beast. It contains such beauteous and varied words as “tatterdemalion,”* “punch,” “vulpine,”† “mendacious,”‡ “croak,” “badger,” “Saturday,” and “snow.” It has the power to communicate a huge spectrum of emotions in a compact, vague phrase (“I love you,” “I’m not sure about that”) and also to express accurately very specific notions (“He’s a little ochlophobic,”§ “Pass me the potassium permanganate”). The shapes and sounds of our words are
hugely varied, often depending on whence our magpie language has picked up specific terms: the vowel-heavy, melodic “anaesthesia,” “echo,” and “chaos” from the ancient Greek; the concise, muscular “belch,” “night,” and “cow” from our Anglo-Saxon forefathers; and the sleek “cuisine,” “blonde,” and “rendezvous” from the French, for example.

Today English is an official language of more than fifty countries, including Madagascar, Belize, Fiji, and Singapore and is spoken by more people on Earth than any other. The Oxford English Dictionary contains definitions for more than 500,000 words in current use (some studies record more than 900,000 English words), and the average person probably uses about 1/60 of these in their lifetime. More impressively, Shakespeare’s vocabulary is reckoned to have run to over 24,000 words.

In order to appreciate properly the wonderful works of literary giants like Shakespeare, or indeed to create your own, it is vital to have a basic grasp of how the language works. Grammar provides the building blocks from which the castles of great literature are built.

We are extremely lucky to have such a rich heritage of literature in our language to turn to–whether John Milton, Jane Austen, or James Joyce is your thing. Literature can educate, console, amuse, enrage, challenge, move, and even morally guide (as long as one reads “improving books”). Your reading could be made up of the instructions for the windshield wipers on your car or it could be the poetry of T. S. Eliot, but either way you need to understand your language and its literary heritage to get the best out of the world.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE
WAYS WITH WORDS:
THE BASIC RULES OF GRAMMAR

As we have seen, there are thousands of words to choose from in our generous language, but it may surprise you to learn that there are only nine kinds of words (although in some circumstances a word can belong to more than one class).

1. Nouns are “naming” words. They name people, places, or things. There are three kinds of noun: Proper nouns are specific names of people and places and are written with capital letters at the start of them: “America,” “Danny.” Abstract nouns are things or concepts that you can’t touch: “shyness,” “romance,” “happiness.” Common nouns are the words for everything else: “car,” “jacket,” “cinema.”

2. Verbs are words indicating action or change: “to sing,” “to kiss,” “to be,” “to eat.” Many verbs have a basic root form and usually different endings are added to this root depending on the subject of the verb and the tense: “I dance,” “he dances,” “they dance,” “I danced,” “he danced,” “they danced.”

The subject of a verb is the person or thing who is carrying out the action of the verb and the object of a verb is the person or thing that the verb is being carried out upon. In the sentence “Danny kissed
Sandy,” “Danny” is the subject, “kissed” is the verb, and “Sandy” is the lucky object.

In order to express some of the different tenses (present, future, past, etc.), a verb can become a verb phrase, incorporating auxiliary verbs to indicate timing. For example, in the sentence “Danny had been kissing Sandy,” “had been kissing” is a verb phrase.

There is a particular subgroup of auxiliary verbs called modal verbs, such as “may,” “must,” and “can.” These express how likely or possible an event is. In the sentence “Danny can kiss Sandy,” “can” is the modal verb.

3. Adjectives are words that modify and describe nouns. In “the shiny car,” “shiny” is the adjective. Adjectives can themselves be modified, in which case they become adjectival phrases: “the impressively shiny car.”

4. Adverbs tell us how, where, or when something is done. In other words, they describe the manner, place, or time of a verb. Many adverbs are created by adding “ly” to the end of an adjective: so
“slow” becomes “slowly.”

5. Pronouns are the words that replace nouns in a sentence. Pronouns like “he,” “which,” “none,” and “you” are used to make sentences less cumbersome and less repetitive. Without pronouns we would end up with childish sentences like: “Danny took liberties with Sandy at the drive-in, so Sandy slapped Danny and left Danny.”

6. Conjunctions are used to link words, phrases, and clauses, as in: “I want the burger and the milkshake,” or “Tell me when you are ready.”

7. Articles are very easy to remember as they consist only of “a,” “an,” and “the.” “A/an” is the indefinite article–it can refer to any member of a group: “A boy kissed her.” The definite article is used when the specific subject is known: “The boy kissed her.”

8. Prepositions link nouns, pronouns, and phrases to other words in a sentence. Prepositions usually indicate relationships in space or time. Examples are “under,” “above,” “behind,” “from,” “with,” “at,” and “for.”

9. An interjection is a word added to a sentence to convey emotion. It is not grammatically related to any other part of the sentence. Interjections are often followed with an exclamation mark. Examples are “Ouch, that hurt!” and “Hey! Leave me alone!”

SATISFYING SENTENCES

When speaking we are often regrettably casual in our manner and fail to communicate in complete units of sense–also known as sentences. It is natural for oral communication to sometimes consist of fragments, or even of hand gestures and grunts, but for clarity on the page we should attempt to write in full sentences (unless of course one is composing an experimental surrealist haiku or some other advanced form).

Sentences are made up of one or more clauses. A clause is a group of words that includes a verb and usually also a subject. There are two types of clauses: main clauses and subordinate clauses. Main clauses are complete units of sense and must contain a verb and a subject–every sentence must include a main clause. Subordinate clauses are dependent on the main clause and do not have to be complete units of sense. For example, in the sentence “The acrid stench of exhaust fumes filled the
air, reminding Sandy of Danny and encouraging her to change her outfit,” the main clause is “The acrid stench of exhaust fumes filled the air.” The clauses “reminding Sandy of Danny” and “encouraging her to change her outfit” are both subordinate.

THE HUMBLE GERUND

A gerund might sound like a shy woodland creature who whiles away his days in a burrow and munches on water lilies, but the true meaning of the word is far more grammatically intriguing. The gerund in English is identical in form to the present participle (“running,” “spitting,” “drinking,” “fighting”), but it is a verb that functions in sentences as a noun either by itself or as part of a clause.

For example, in the sentence “Fighting is fun,” “fighting” is a gerund and acts as a noun, and in the sentence “Fighting the system is fun,” “fighting the system” is a whole clause that acts as a noun.

COMMON GRAMMATICAL MISTAKES

“THAT” OR “WHICH”?: RELATIVE PRONOUNS AND CLAUSES

In grammar, as in life, people are often confused and frustrated by relatives. Happily, the world of grammar is more logical and serene than the world of grandmas.

Relative pronouns join clauses together in a sentence and begin subordinate clauses that give more information about the main clause–this kind of clause is called a relative clause. Who, whom, which, that, whose, when, where, and why are all relative pronouns.

There are two types of relative clauses: restrictive (also called defining) and nonrestrictive (also called, you guessed it, nondefining).

A restrictive relative clause identifies what is being referred to by the previous noun or pronoun. For example, in the sentence “The sweater that I wore yesterday was pink,” the relative clause is “that I wore yesterday” and it is a restrictive relative clause because it identifies “the sweater.” A restrictive relative clause cannot be removed from the sentence without affecting its meaning and it is never preceded by a comma.

A nonrestrictive relative clause gives us more information about the preceding noun or pronoun but is not essential to the meaning of the sentence. Nonrestrictive clauses are displayed inside commas to separate them from the rest of the sentence. For example, in the sentence “The sweater, which was bright pink, was knitted by my aunt,” the nonrestrictive relative clause is “which was bright pink.” You could remove this from the sentence without losing the sentence’s central meaning.

• “That” or “which” can be used in restrictive relative clauses, although “that” should be the preferred choice unless the clause begins with a preposition, or you need to add emphasis or avoid the
repetition of the word “that.”

• Only “which” can be used in nonrestrictive relative clauses. “The sweater, that was bright pink, was knitted by my aunt” is incorrect.

DARLING, YOUR PARTICIPLE IS DANGLING: THE DANGERS OF DANGLING PARTICIPLES

Dangling participles may sound like a bizarre threat, but you should keep a sharp eye out for them and always give them a wide berth. A dangling participle is a clause containing a present participle with no subject, followed by a main clause with a subject different from the subject of the participle. This inelegant and nonsensical construction should be avoided at all costs.

For example, “Having read the book, a bottle of wine was opened” is incorrect. The bottle of wine did not read the book. This should be reworded along the lines of “Having read the book, she opened a bottle of wine.”

DIVIDE AND OVERRULE: SPLIT INFINITIVES

A split infinitive is where the infinitive form of a verb–for example “to cook,” “to go,” “to kill”–is interrupted by an adverb. Split infinitives should be avoided if possible although sometimes they are necessary, and you should boldly face down any irate grammarians who object. The opening lines of Star Trek contain the most famous split infinitive of all time: “to boldly go.” This should strictly be “to go boldly.”

KNOWING ME, KNOWING YOU: “ME,” “MYSELF,” AND “I”

Surprisingly, considering how central we all are to our own universes, many people make mistakes when referring to themselves in sentences. “I” is used when you are the subject of the sentence and “me” should be used only when you are the object. “Tristan and me smoked a hundred cigarettes today” is incorrect–the sentence should be “Tristan and I smoked a hundred cigarettes today.” The way to work this out is to remove Tristan from the sentence: you wouldn’t say “Me smoked a hundred cigarettes today,” you would naturally say “I smoked a hundred cigarettes today.” The same rule applies if you are confused about when to use “she”or “her” and “he” or “him.” “Tristan and she smoked a hundred cigarettes today” is correct, rather than “Tristan and her smoked a hundred cigarettes today.”

“Myself ” is a reflexive pronoun. Reflexive pronouns are pronouns that refer back to the subject of a sentence: e.g., “oneself,” “himself,” “yourself,” “themselves.” They are used when the subject and object of a sentence are the same, such as in the sentence “I love myself a bit too much.” “Myself ” should never be used as a substitute for “me” or “I.” “He gave myself the tax return” is incorrect. It should be “He gave me the tax return.”

!??..:;,?!!: PUNCTUATION

Except for in the work of very clever novelists, sentences in prose are broken up into logical parts using punctuation marks. In speech, these represent pauses, but in written language there are certain rules that should be followed.

Periods divide sentences from other sentences. They are the strongest form of punctuation. “Gwendoline is rather nasty. She is holding Mary-Lou under the water.”

Question marks are used in place of periods when the sentence is a question: “Is Mary-Lou all right?”

Exclamation marks are used after words, phrases, or sentences that are exclamatory, hortatory (i.e., giving encouragement or advice), particularly enthusiastic, or full of wonder or contempt: “What a
horrible cow!”

Colons are used to introduce lists or to separate main clauses in a sentence where the following clause explains, paraphrases, or gives an example of the preceding clause: “Darrell had a short temper: she
lost control and smacked Gwendoline in the face.”

Semicolons are used between two main clauses when they are connected together more strongly than warrants a period. They are also used to divide sentences that complement or parallel each other in some way or to divide up lists if commas aren’t clear enough to mark the divisions: “Miss Grayling, the principal; Miss Potts, the first-grade teacher; Mr. Young, the music teacher; Mam’zelle Dupont, the French teacher.”

Dashes are used to indicate a pause or to introduce a list or explanation. Pairs of dashes are often used in the place of parentheses or commas: for example, “Mary-Lou is timid–some would say positively
spineless–and rather small of stature.”

Parentheses are used to separate extra information or explanations from the rest of the sentence. Square brackets are used to indicate material that has been inserted by an editor, or someone other than the author of the rest of the text: “Gwendoline broke Mary-Lou’s most treasured possession [an expensive fountain pen] and tried to frame Darrell for the crime.”

Commas are used as light divisions to make the structure and meaning of sentences clear, for example in lists. They are also used to mark nonrestrictive relative clauses. They are useful tools to avoid ambiguity. The famous sentence “He eats shoots and leaves” means something entirely different when a comma is added: “He eats, shoots and leaves.” Some people use commas more than others so the rules are slightly more flexible than for other forms of punctuation. However, you should never separate a subject from its verb with a comma or a verb from its object. In the sentence above, separating the verb “eats” from its object “shoots and leaves” utterly changes the meaning of the sentence. You also cannot link two main clauses using a comma; you must use a conjunction instead. For example, “Gwendoline is a spoilt brat, she also has blonde hair” is wrong. This should read “Gwendoline is a spoiled brat and she also has blonde hair.”

Apostrophes are used to indicate possession (“Mary-Lou’s pen,” “Darrell’s temper”). The apostrophe comes before the “s” for singular nouns and after the “s” for plural nouns: “Mary-Lou’s pen”; “the
girls’ swimming lesson.” However, for nouns that don’t add an “s” in the plural, you need to add “ ’s,” e.g., “the women’s con ver sation.” Apostrophes are also used to indicate missing letters (“she’ll” is a
contraction of “she will”). Please be sure to remember that “its” means “belonging to it” and “it’s” means “it is.”

Quotation marks are used to indicate quotations and direct speech. “‘It wasn’t me,’ she answered.”

Hyphens are used in some compound words, such as “mind-blowing” and “re-cover.” They are also used to connect words that would look awkward or unclear if they were put together to make one word, e.g., re-enact, drip-proof, part-time. Hyphens are also used to link words used to describe an attribute of the noun, such as “well-known villain,” “in-depth investigation,” and to avoid ambiguity–the “deep-blue sea” is different from the “deep blue sea.”

Awesome Grab for Common Knowledge we forget
By The Cozy Reader
I saw this at Borders. Loved it and bought it on Amazon.
It's a perfect collection of knowledge we've learned but have mostly forgotten about.

I love trivia so this book helps me remember those random facts not everyone remembers.

I really like the format used in the book. I like the humor behind it as well.

The quizzes at the end of each chapter was surprising! I didn't want to be tested on the knowledge! But I guess that's the whole point! I like to skip to the quiz first to see what I already think I know. It's not as easy as you'd think!

I will keep this on my shelf and possibly in the bathroom for some light reading. :)

Not Dead & Not for Sale: A Memoir, by Scott Weiland

In the early 1990s, Stone Temple Pilots - not U2, not Nirvana, not Pearl Jam - was the hottest band in the world. STP toppled such megabands as Aerosmith and Motley Crue on MTV and in the mainstream charts. Lead singer Scott Weiland became an iconic frontman in the tradition of Mick Jagger, David Bowie and Robert Plant. Then, when STP imploded, it was Weiland who emerged as the emblem of rock star excess, with his well-publicized drug busts and trips to rehab. Weiland has since made a series of stunning comebacks, fronting the supergroup Velvet Revolver, releasing solo work and, most recently, reuniting with Stone Temple Pilots. He still struggles with the bottle, but he has prevailed as a loving, dedicated father, as well as a business-savvy artist whose well of creativity is far from empty. Weiland's memoir explores his early years as an altar boy, along with his first experiences with sex and drugs. He discusses his complex relationships with his parents, stepfather, siblings, and the love of his life, Mary Forsberg Weiland. Readers learn the fascinating stories behind his best-known songs, and what it was like to be there at the beginning of the grunge phenomenon - as Rolling Stone proclaimed on its cover, the year that punk broke. Not Dead & Not for Sale is a hard rock memoir to be reckoned with - a passionate, insightful and at times humorous book that reads with extraordinary narrative force.

PRELUDE

EVERY TIME I TRY TO CATCH UP TO MY LIFE, something stops me. Different people making claims on my life. Old friends telling me new friends aren’t true friends. All friends trying to convince me that I can’t survive without them.

Then there are the pay-for-hire get-off-drugs professionals with their own methods and madness. They help, they hurt, they welcome me into their institutions … and, well, their madness.

Welcome to my life.

Two years ago, my life was self-restricted to a sober living house, meaning that I walked through the doors of my own free will. Within hours, I watched the game of communal free will get stepped on, laughed at, and batted around like a Ping-Pong ball.

One of my fellow patients was a rocker chick just turned twenty-one. She had a problem with depression. We met in the lounge and talked the night away, smoking cigarettes, exchanging words of comfort.

“Am I pretty?” she asked me.

“You are beautiful,” I told her.

“Everyone says I smell because I haven’t showered.”

“Everyone can get fucked,” I told her. “When you’re depressed, you’re not exactly in the mood for a shower.”

She told me a story of grief and confusion. I listened. When she was through, we hugged good night. She kissed me sweetly. She wanted more.

“We can’t do this,” I said. “It’s not right. Not now, not here.”

A day later, I was approached by one of the counselors whom I considered a first-class shit talker.

“Rumor has it that the two of you were intimate.”

“What’s intimate?” I asked.

“Sex.”

“No!”

“She obviously has a crush on you.”

“Okay. What of it?”

“I heard you two had sex in the Jacuzzi.”

“No Jacuzzi,” I said. “No sex. Besides, who has sex in a Jacuzzi?”

“I want to know what happened,” she insisted.

“We were flirtatious. That was inappropriate. So we stopped.”

This young woman was confronted at our next group session. Sixteen hours later, she sliced her leg down past the fatty tissue. She was a cutter. They took her out of the villa and put her in a psych ward.

What can I do about it?

I write a poem, “The Little Villa and Painted Egg.”

Minds squall, alcohol, heroin

The man, the boy, the girl

The little villa where you live

You need to fill that pain inside

Xanex, Valium, barbiturates—they ease the easy side

Of all you fucked-up managerial types

You love to rule by what you say

Not by what you find

Beautiful garden, Easter eggs, those that you never really had

You stole our experiences and stole our baskets

That’s how you found twenty-one out of fifty-seven

THAT WAS LAST MONTH. This week I’m home dealing with those who “manage” my business life, those who, for their own purposes, direct my moves. They are my partners, assistants, and drug coaches (whom we call “minders”). There is no peace, not for an hour, not for thirty seconds. Someone is always showing up with calculated suggestions and implied instructions. I don’t know, but I think I’ve done pretty well for myself, even during my long-lasting, narcotic misadventures—all without the protective bubble of paranoid employees, partners, and helpers—er, minders.

Meanwhile, the facts are these:

It has been eight and a half years since I shot dope and nearly three years since I did coke.

I still drink. A regular garden-variety boozer, I am like any other barfly or drink-alone kind of guy. My relationship to liquor is not romantic the way I once envisioned my love affair with dope. I struggle to stop drinking, but I don’t see it as suicidal. In any event, I’m not drinking today. Today I’m inviting you into the middle of my life and the middle of my head. My heart feels a bit closed off because I’m realizing that there are few people, if any, that I fully trust. That’s an amazing statement to make and brings me to what may be the purpose of this book.

How did I get to this point? One word could probably suffice—loss.

I’m searching for explanations.

Someone recently gave me a T-shirt that said, I’M IN LIKE SEVEN BANDS.

There is a Stone Temple Pilots story to tell. There is a Velvet Revolver story to tell. There is a love story to tell. And a drug story to tell.

AMONG MY GREAT LOVES is that category of substances called heroin. Narcotic alkaloids. Derivatives of opium. I describe this stuff lovingly. I do so at the risk of high irresponsibility. It is not my intention to mislead anyone looking to live a righteous life. God knows that the shit will kill you, inside and out, soul to the bone. At the same time, I am committed to an honest assessment of the wreckage of my past. I loved opiates; I hated opiates; I am attracted to opiates perhaps the way John Keats was attracted to death. One hundred ninety years ago, the romantic poet wrote “Ode to a Nightingale”:

I have been half in love with easeful Death,

Call’d him soft names in many a mused rhyme,

To take into the air my quiet breath;

Now more than ever seems it rich to die,

To cease upon the midnight with no pain,

With thou art pouring forth thy soul abroad

In such an ecstasy!

IS DEATH THE MUSE? Is rock and roll the nightingale? Are opiates the key to unlocking the magical kingdom where colorful flowers fade to black? Why should anyone—especially a kid or a man who suspects that he or she may have talent—be drawn to such a kingdom?

I don’t know. Except that the pull is visceral. It may also be an act of self-loating or anger against home or society or even the human condition in which the promise of death shadows us from those first fresh moments of birth.

I think of the young woman overwhelmed by a compulsion to cut herself. The compulsion is heartbreaking and bizarre, but maybe not bizarre at all—maybe it’s simply the most honest compulsion of all because it gets to the heart of the matter. My long opiate-dazed days and sleepless nights were all about cutting myself emotionally. When I got high, the last thing in the world I wanted to do was party or interact with other human beings. I retreated to the dark corners of my room and my life. I stayed alone and disappeared down black holes where no one could find me. I couldn’t find myself. I didn’t want to find myself. I became invisible. Or, as I put it in the song “Dead and Bloated,” “I am smellin’ like the rose that someone gave me on my birthday deathbed.”

the worst Rock n' Roll Autobio I've ever read
By STP fan
I am a huge STP fan, and have been looking forward to this books release since Mr. Weiland first began speaking of it 5-10 years ago. Given that much time to write the book and working with a talented co-author in David Ritz I felt like this was going to be a great read, from the point of view of a man that has lead one hell of a crazy life. instead all we are given is an extended recount of every article that is written about scott. There is almost no incite into the inner-workings of any of Scott's bands, or even expanded interpretations of well known story's of his life.
The book will take most people 1.5-3 hours to read, and approx. 10% of that is lyrics from songs he's written. It's 238 pages but reads like a 100 page book due to the "art", blank pages, and huge page breaks. so How do you cram great incite into the life of someone who's sold 40 Million records, been in rehab countless times, and been a permanent fixture in rock news for 20 years in 100 pages? You don't. Weiland's ex-wife Mary Forsberg's book released last year was much better written, much more informative, and much more interesting then Scott's book. Almost everything printed in this book was covered with more clarity in Mary's book.
If you really want to know about the history of STP, or Velvet revolver or Scott's solo work, there is much more information on-line then is offered in this book. It's incredible how little he delves into this actually. I haven't gone and actually counted but I'm sure the name Eric Kretz (STP drummer) only appears in the book 3 times. surely in 20 years of STP's history, Scott and Eric had SOME sort of note-worthy interaction. It almost seems that he purposely left all the interesting details of his life out. As if he started off with the intentions of baring his soul on paper like Anthony Kiedis did in his autobio, but quickly decided that he'd rather not have any information that wasn't already public knowledge released.
I have no doubt that the Story of Scott Weiland would be a compelling read, unfortunatly it appears that Scott figured out AFTER signing his book deal that he wasn't ready to let the world in on his private life.

Why NDANFS is this Generation's NOHGOA
By Michael P. Naughton
No lack of substance here (literally). True, some readers, reviewers and fans might be disappointed by the terse, tenuous and to-the-point chapters of Scott Weiland's autobiography. However, I found his memoir insightful and edifying. I think he was wise to say just enough and the rest can be gleaned from his lyrics and his vast contribution to music, which is most important.

This bio is fast paced, like the author's tempestuous lifestyle, and supports the fact that some of our most gifted artists are often our most troubled (see also my review on Andy Warhol Was a Hoarder). It is sometimes a mixed-blessing, curse or nature of the beast. Like the poet Rainer Maria Rilke once said: "If my devils are to leave me, I am afraid my angels will take flight as well.”

Akin to Jim Morrison's biography "No One Here Gets Out Alive" (NOHGOA), "Not Dead And Not For Sale" (NDANFS) follows a similar trajectory and classic Three Act Tragedy as we watch The Bow Drawn, The Arrow Flies, The Arrow Falls.

Scott Wieland was a self-professed chameleon. He was immensely talented, intelligent, instinctive and most of all deeply sensitive. You can see his influence and "stamp" in all projects ranging from STP, Velvet Revolver and The Wildabouts. He was also a colossal loss, and his lifestyle serves as a cautionary tale.

In the final analysis Rock and Roll, at its best, is a circus show of a business, as dangerous as it entertaining. Scott Wieland took it to the brink as he once wrote in "You Got No Right:"

"I've took it farther on the outside
I've took it nearly to the brink
And if you've seen me on the outside
You would have barely seen me breathe..."

Addiction is one hell of a demon to slay, and it took a lot of guts to share personal issues of abuse and personal struggles and his bipolar disorder. It is a constant source of frustration, disappointment and devastation to those close to the addict, especially true friends and band mates. He got up close and personal with the hard stuff. Jim Morrison, as it was often reported, steered clear of heroin and that substance might have eventually killed him in Paris, albeit accidental or speculative.

Unlike NOHGOA, there is no mystery with Scott Weiland's death and how the Arrow Falls, the hero and author of this tragedy dies on a December 3, 2015, to the world's shock and sadness. He outlived Mr. MoJo Risin' by 21 years (July 3, 1971).

Unfortunately, the dragon or demon known as addiction won in the end with Scott Weiland. He leaves us with great insight and three decades of music to enjoy, resonating and/or relating without having to experience the pain ourselves.

As Jim Morrison once wrote: "There Will Never Be Another One Like You..."

That applies to both Morrison and Weiland.

BUY THIS NOW!!!
By Ann Harenda
“Not Dead and Not For Sale” was amazing! I literally could not put it down. I’m a huge Scott Weiland / STP / Velvet Revolver fan so when I saw this, I really had to get it. Admittedly, I bought it after he died.
Anyways, Scott did a great job of bringing me in to his life. I already knew quite a bit about Scott’s life and his tumultuous relationship with his wife, Mary.
What I wasn’t expecting was to actually feel BAD for Scott. I gained a better understanding of why Scott (and Mary) was the way he was.
It was a tragically phenomenal book.
A total inside-look at the “reality” of rock ‘n roll … coupled with the horrid life a person with mental illness suffers.

Excellent
By D. Duffer
This book has been anything but dry, wordy, or confusing. The Holy Spirit has used Adrian Rogers mightily and has shown me a great deal in this last chapter of the Bible. I pray for Dr. Rogers and the wonderful ministry God has entrusted him with. God bless you.

"One of the three or four best on this subject!"
By Billie Travis, 2005 Kentucky Teacher of the Year
Adrian Rogers recently passed away, and with him, some of the finest teaching skills in Christendom.

His Revelation is one of the best books on the subject. His strength is talking to the reader--not at the reader.

If you want Revelation in-depth, you might seek out "Revelation for the Complete Idiot". If you want a scholarly work, read Mounce.

If you want a teenager-oriented (or brand new believer, or teacher) book on Revelation, there is nothing better than: "Dragons, Grasshoppers, & Frogs!" by Jerry L. Parks.

But if you want a conversational-style commentary--one with wonderful alliteration (which Rogers was the best at!) look no further than this book. You will not be disappointed!

A Satisfying Unveiling, Indeed
By Adelaimar C. Arias-jose
The book lives up to its title. Dr. Rogers unveils for us a portrait of Jesus Christ in the book of Revelation which is so different from the Gospels, the Epistles or the Old Testament. We are familiar with Jesus Christ as he was presented in the Gospels as a meek and lowly Lamb which takes the sin of the world: and that is crucial. But to be content with that picture of Christ is to deny the Bible's whole teaching about the person of Jesus Christ. The book of Revelation as Dr. Rogers explains it lifts up Christ to the glory and majesty he truly deserves.
Once you read this book, you will disabuse yourself of the fear and trepidation about the Great Tribulation and instead, you will see and know Jesus Christ in a different light. Reading this book is like holding up a diamond to the light to see all of its beautiful facets. Read and study the Old Testament to see the richness of the promise of Christ as Messiah; read the Gospels to know Christ as Savior; read the Epistles to know Christ as Lord; but read this book to understand the Revelation of Christ as Judge and King.
This book is truly uplifting. The message of the book will fill you with hope and with expectation of meeting Jesus Christ when he comes in his glory! Hallelujah!
