Good book. It was required for a college course

Good book. It was required for a college course. The font is easy enough to read, not too small as some print in other books have been. The chapters were pretty short (2-6 pages). The book was easy to understand & written in a way that when the author explains a scenario, I can imagine it happening. If you have ever stayed in any hotel or dined in any restaurant, you can relate the examples contained within the book to your experience.

Loved the recipes. The juices were very easy and don't use any artificial sweeteners. I enjoy throwing in all the ingredients and watching them blend, but more so, reading about the benefits. You can actually feel which juices do what. Some provide energy kick and others actually clear the mind. My favorites for effect are relaxing cleanses but taste-wise Deep Sable Slushie & Papaya Slash are the the best!

These juice recipes are amazing! I'm always looking for new juice recipes to try and this book hit the spot. My favorite is the immune serum. I LOVE asparagus! Although the Cherry Berry is a near 2nd. You will feel (and look) a lot better if you continue to use the recipes in this book. It's a great natural and fun way to improve your overall health.

Review of "This Present Triumph"

Ephesians is a basic and yet critical book both for the life of the New Testament Church and Christian. Thus, we remain indebted to and thankful for new scholarly insights that assist us in approaching this important book in a fresh way. Dr. Richard Cozart, has provided such a treatment in his recently published work on Ephesians, which contains the fruit of his doctoral research and writing at the University of Wales. Here, Cozart notes the connection between the Isaianic New Exodus motif and Ephesians’ focus on the present triumph of the people of God. Cozart also furnishes important clues for properly interpreting the “Armor of God” found in Ephesians 6. Rather than rummaging through the entire canon to define the pieces of armor as do many commentators, he carefully defines the various pieces of armor based upon how Paul uses the same word, words, or concepts earlier in his letter. While such an approach seems to be common sense, Cozart’s material is the first that I have seen that clearly articulates this proposition. Cozart combines his rich experience as a counselor, pastor, professor, and scholar to keep the body of Christ up to date on the latest perspectives in the Book of Ephesians. My hope and prayer is that this book will be added to the personal libraries of pastor and scholar alike as well as all interested laymen.

A better way of reading Ephesians

Richard Cozart has brought a completely new way of understanding Paul's letter to the Ephesians. He explores the place of exodus and paschal sacrifice imagery and identifies themes that other commentators on the letter have missed. I cannot see how any future research on this letter can ignore the conclusions of this work and would encourage all researchers, pastors and serious readers of the NT to become acquainted with its powerful arguments. It is too important to be ignored!

Davide Di Gennaro loves to introduce himself as a mathematician, but a better definition would be a philosopher. After studying history of art and functional analysis for some years, he switched to algorithm design and C++. He has been showing the marvels of metaprogramming techniques since the late nineties: as nobody could really understand him, he was eventually nicknamed "the professor". He works for big companies, where his real identity is ignored, and he spends his free time as a photographer. Someone said that "he makes the impossible possible".

A Classic

I initially approached this book with a bit of caution, as I had found other popular books I read previously on C++ templates quite heavy and mostly irrelevant to my day job.
But as soon as I read chapters 2 and 3 I realized this book is very different.
The first chapters explain in a clear way all that most people need to know about templates and template metafunctions,
and provide the reader with a very practical set of ideas that can immediately be implemented in the code you're working on.
For example, I started using static assertions and tagging almost immediately.
Then the real meat starts, with chapter 4 explaining in detail how to write metafunctions and then proceeding to overload resolution in chapter 5.
Before reading this, I thought this was mostly relevant to compiler writers, but Di Gennaro's explanation of how to exploit SFINAE was really useful
to me, in fact I started using only_if in my code on the same day I read the section.
After this, Advanced C++ Metaprogramming really gets "Advanced" and explains many practical ways of programming with templates,
ensuring that the most amount of computation is executed at compile time. There is a very good section on Lambda expressions, though I've not had the chance to use them yet.
Besides the tools that this book teaches, I think its biggest strength is that difficulty progression is so well calibrated that by the time I finished the book I really have become a better programmer. My way of thinking about my code has changed. Now I see new possibilities, and I try to see if things can be done at compile time using templates.
I will definitely put this book next to my other all-time favourite, Inside the C++ Object Model by Lippman.
Advanced C++ Metaprogramming has the potential to become a classic.

This is a *very* technical book, but a very good one

This book is a mind-bender. Metaprogramming in C++ using templates is a "dark art" of its own, but this book helps demonstrate both the utility of it and shows loads of practical examples of what to do with it (and how). Do *not* expect to digest this book in a single sitting, or even in several. It is *thick* -- not just in terms of page count, but in terms of information density. It is certainly not "light reading." Expect instead to read and re-read sections at a time to fully grasp what's being discussed. Expect more success and understanding in reading this text when done while working with a compiler to actually test the concepts being presented as they're encountered. This is fun stuff, but it's thick and heavy stuff.

The book is self-published by its author, and it shows. There are spelling and grammar errors, the margins are a bit too narrow, and some text is hard to read because of the choice to use gradient backgrounds that get a little too dark. None of this matters, however -- the content of the book is outstanding and this kind of self-publishing is to be applauded and encouraged. In fact, I'd love to collaborate with this author (or others like him) on editing a second edition both to further my own understanding of metaprogramming and to improve the already good quality of this book.

Good intention but badly written

It is unbelievable to me that so many people found this book worthy of 5 stars, beyond belief. I don't doubt the author is a good programmer who has had a lot of experience with template metaprogramming, and I can appreciate collecting a lot of obscure techniques in one book. Those are all good reasons to write a book. But the writing is plain terrible. There is no beginning, no gradual explication, just short comments on short snippet of codes. This is not a problem for introducing simple constructs in simple languages such as basic Python, but for C++ template, it is a disaster. I have to read this book slower than I read real analysis textbooks and still get lost on every page.

I bought this book when I saw many good reviews and I felt a real need for such a book, but now I don't know what to think of them. Even reviews for classical C++ books don't get such uniformly good reviews; all but one gave five stars? Those reviews have jargon but praise the book in general terms. I don't want to impugn people without evidence, but I just don't believe the reviewers. Next time I will be more wary of unbelievably good reviews that don't show depth.

Excellent book for sharing between parent and child

Anthology?

Well not really, a short selection of 13 songs dating back to 1967, lots of stuff I wasn't interested in, song books should always have the song list view able so its not a blind purchase, specially true if you going to call it "Anthology" and it's not (shame on Alfred Publishing). Let me open your eyes:

Amateurish

This won't be a thorough review because I couldn't get past the rank amateur nature of the photos. Usually photos draw one in to read the text. In this book's case I was so put off by the photos that I didn't want to hear anything the photographer/author had to say about studio photography. What it boils down to is a bad aesthetic sense on the part of the photographer coupled with only an adequate product presented as examples of studio work. I was VERY glad I purchased this second hand and didn't blow $24 on it.

Pass on it

I purchased this as a bargain bin book and was simply hoping to get a few ideas from it. From that perspective, I did get a still-life idea or two that I'll work on in the future. That is all I got from it however.

I can't give the book high marks as a studio tutorial because frankly it is not very good. The text is introductory and gives a broad overview of studio lighting, posing, and composition but is nothing spectacular. The images in the book fall way short. Many of them were almost certainly shot in the 1970s or early 80s, yet the book is copyrighted in 2002. Many of the pictures are very, very HORRID. It is hard to take anything the authors say very seriously when the pictures are so bad. The book was written for film-based cameras, lenses, and accessories instead of digital; however, I expected as much and was hoping to pick up tips on lighting equipment irrespective of medium. Unfortunately, The Photographer's Guide to the Studio is not much of a guide to anything of any detail.

I am admittedly not a huge fan of Fitzgerald's work, although I can and do appreciate his sharp wit that informs observations and commentary about behavior and motivations. What stands out most sharply is the fact that human behavior and desires have not changed: the characters in this story are self-absorbed, obsessed with fitting in, vary in their social skills and awareness, and are far too prone to influence from those on the "higher rungs" of the social ladder.

There are several moments to enjoy in this story: proclamations about the psychology of attracting men and developing charm that fly from Marjorie's lips are clever and the connection between letters Fitzgerald sent with advice to his sister are abundantly clear. I cannot help but think that his advice did contain some of the lesson that is visited on both cousins at the end, and presenting a story with such a clever conclusion, slightly devious and wholly appropriate for the character of Bernice was satisfying.

The narration provided by Lee Ann Howlett presented the story and the characters in a cleanly presented form: small tonal distinctions delineated the characters from one another and the narrative in a well-modulated presentation. Finely nuanced inflections provide verbal clues to the attitudes and personalities of the characters, from hesitancy to offhanded bravado, each was a perfectly voiced addition to the written text.

This is one of the stories that become the definition of a classic short: the setting is nearly a century prior, but the characters and people are real and easy to relate to with a modern eye. This should be your introduction to Fitzgerald's writing, short, sweet and beautiful prose in his style, but not so long as to feel overwhelming.

Recommended Quick Read!

"Bernice had all the sensations of Marie Antoinette bound for the guillotine in a tumbrel. Vaguely she wondered why she did not cry out that it was all a mistake. It was all she could do to keep from clutching her hair with both hands to protect it from the suddenly hostile world."

I read F. Scott's Fitzgerald's short story "Bernice Bobs Her Hair" in high school. I loved it! After reading it again twenty plus years later - the angst, Marjorie, and Bernice - I still love this short story set in the Roaring Twenties.

Fitzgerald was inspired by letters to his younger sister on how to be more attractive to men. We see the sexism of the time - the cattiness and manipulations of teens, the peer pressure - which are told through third person omniscient narrative.

The characters live in upper crust society and they can be perceived as shallow people, but Bernice is the underdog in the story. She doesn't understand why she doesn't fit in with Marjories friends, and the need to see her rise above Marjorie's scathing review of her sucks us into the story.

I'm not too sure about Fitzgerald's characterization of Marjorie. She sounds like a man in a woman's body, instead of a behaving like a forward-thinking female. It makes me wonder how much Fitzgerald is represented in Majorie. Despite my little issue, this short story, which was first posted in The Saturday Evening Post in 1920, is a classic!
