Stanislavsky in Focus: An Acting Master for the Twenty-First Century (Routledge Theatre Classics), by Sharon Marie Carnicke

Stanislavsky in Focus brilliantly examines the history and actual premises of Stanislavsky’s 'System', separating myth from fact with forensic skill.

The first edition of this now classic study showed conclusively how the 'System' was gradually transformed into the Method, popularised in the 1950s by Lee Strasberg and the Actor’s Studio. It looked at the gap between the original Russian texts and what most English-speaking practitioners still imagine to be Stanislavsky’s ideas.

This thoroughly revised new edition also delves even deeper into:

  • the mythical depiction of Stanislavsky as a tyrannical director and teacher
  • yoga, the mind-body-spirit continuum and its role in the ‘System’
  • how Stanislavsky used subtexts to hide many of his ideas from Soviet censors.

The text has been updated to address all of the relevant scholarship, particularly in Russia, since the first edition was published. It also features an expanded glossary on the System's terminology and its historical exercises, as well as more on the political context of Stanislavsky's work, its links with cognitive science, and the System's relation to contemporary developments in actor-training. It will be a vital part of every practitioner's and historian's library.

Essential Companion to Stanislavski's Work
By Jane Brody
Sharon Carnicke's book, Stanislavski in Focus, is an absolute necessity for any serious student of acting. Many students don't read Stanislavski at all, but pick up third and fourth hand misinformation, and proceed to believe that they know who the man was and what he postulated.
The problem is exacerbated for American readers of Stanislavski's towering work (now given a superior translation by Jean Benedetti, as An Actor's Work) in that they have little knowledge of the influence the Communist Revolution and the Stalinist regime had on the publication and the word choices that Elizabeth Hapgood, the original American translator was forced to use. Looked at through the prism of Soviet Materialism, the colorless words, ‘super-objective’, ‘objective’, ‘task’ and other such terms make sense. The language is not that of artists; it is that of factory owners. Ms Carnicke's work opens an entire field of thought concerning Stanislavski's work.

Film as Philosophy: Essays in Cinema after Wittgenstein and CavellFrom Brand: Palgrave Macmillan

A series of essays on film and philosophy whose authors - philosophers or film studies experts - write on a wide variety of films: classic Hollywood comedies, war films, Eastern European art films, science fiction, showing how film and watching it can not only illuminate philosophy but, in an important sense, be doing philosophy. The book is crowned with an interview with Wittgensteinian philosopher Stanley Cavell, discussing his interests in philosophy and in film and how they can come together.

Review

'A collection of articles on individual films both interesting in itself, and fascinating as a sign of the fruitful and widespread impact on thinking about movies that Stanley Cavell's work is beginning to have. To top it off, there is a conversation with Cavell (conducted by Andrew Klevan) that is, by itself, worth the price of admission.' - Professor Stanley Bates, Department of Philosophy, Middlebury College, USA

'...a fine collection of writings by a new generation of philosophers interested in looking anew at film as philosophical practice. Rather than merely using cinema to illustrate classic philosophical positions, each endeavours to see film as a potential source of philosophical insight. In this respect it represents a wholly new view of the relationship between image and thought.' - Dr John Mullarkey, Department of Philosophy, University of Dundee, UK

'Building on the work of Wittgenstein and Cavell, this anthology draws our attention to ways in which film can be understood as philosophical texts and movie-goers can engage in philosophical investigation. In an assessable format, each author expertly guides us through issues related to memory, identity, reality and appearance, myth, the nature of self, free moral choice, Otherness, and conditions for personhood. In these pages are puzzle-games, jokes and riddles, feminist nightmares, and food for thought surrounding male violence, cannibalism, and myriad narratives about voice, voicelessness, dislocated voices, and the concept of order. We are drawn into discussions about camera angles, color, light and dark, voiceovers, pacing, and music.

The topics raised in these pages are so compelling they call for course development. Philosophical ideas are extended as they are placed in context of the relatively new medium of film. As we learn from these authors, by learning to 'read' films, the potential exists to expand the focus of philosophical engagement from university classrooms to the more public space of the movie theatre. As David Ruben claims, films 'tempt us toward philosophical insight'. Film as philosophy is an idea, and a book, that can be easily embraced.' - Professor Kristin Congdon, Department of Art and Department of Philosophy, University of Central Florida, USA

Excellent collection. If you read one book on film, read this.
By Phil Cheshire
This collection builds on seminal work on Film by the philosopher Stanley Cavell, whose works include, The Claim of Reason & The World Viewed: Reflections on the Ontology of Film. Cavell's work, in turn, is deeply influenced by the Philosophy of Ludwig Wittgenstein (see the collection The New Wittgenstein).
The approach to film explored in this collection is one that eschews the application of theory to film. Film studies has generally approached film through theory: psychoanalytic, Marxist, Feminist, cognitive etc. This serves to render the film under discussion. This collection also eschews the approach evident in recent books on the philosophy of film or those that use films to illustrate philosophy (e.g. Rowlands' The Philosopher at the End of the Universe). While the books in the latter category have their place, they merely use film as a resource for the dramatisation of philosophical problems. In contrast the essays in the collection under review here read the films they discuss as doing philosophy, exploring philosophical themes, actively thinking through philosophical problems. The collection contains a fascinating interview with Stanley Cavell. Stephen Mulhall revisits his own earlier writings on the Alien films, first discussed in On Film. Phil Hutchinson and Rupert Read bring to life the philosophical work undertaken by Christopher Nolan's film Memento, seeing it as a therapeutic dialogue in the manner of Wittgenstein's Philosophical Investigations. The book also contains chapters on Fight Club and Terence Malick's The Thin Red Line (Malick was a student of Cavell's at Harvard; the lead character in the film is named Witt...). Contributors include Simon Glendinning, author of The Idea of Continental Philosophy; Simon Critchley; and Andrew Klevan.
A groundbreaking and enjoyable collection.

Success did not come easy for this 37-year-old Chicago native. In 1993 he was driving trains for the Chicago Transit Authority and struggling to keep a small business from going under. In 1995 he released his first book, Never Satisfied: How and Why Men Cheat, a controversial book of short stories about unfaithful men and the women who support their irresponsible behavior. The large New York publishing companies rejected his work, saying it wasn't marketable - which basically meant, it wasn't good enough. Not willing to concede defeat, Michael decided to self-publish. He borrowed money from friends and family, charged his credit cards to the limit, and sold his automobile. Within eight months, he sold more than 50,000 books and was on Essence and Emerge magazines best sellers' lists. He toured with black expos, sorority conventions, and book fairs. He even signed books at the local nightclubs, and hair salons. "I was determined to make it" he says. "I would sell books at a funeral if they let me". Eventually, his popularity grew and so did the demand for his next book. This time, instead of writing another book on relationships, Michael took a gamble on a novel. "There was a void in African-American novels written by men", he explained. "I wanted to destroy the myth that men don't read". In July of 1997 he released his second book, Men Cry in the Dark. Once again, the book was a big success, selling 30,000 hard cover editions during the first six months. This time the national media paid attention. Michael has been a guest on several local and national radio programs, including the syndicated Tom Joyner Morning Show. His electrifying personality has earned repeated appearances on talk shows such as Ricki Lake, Sally Jesse, Maury Povich, and The View. He has also been a guest host for Tavis Smiley on BET Tonight. By the summer of 1997, demand for his appearances were overwhelming. Organizations, book clubs, and re

Chapter One

Jasmine scented candles illuminated the studio -- creating a spiritual ambiance. I reclined in my chair as I listened to the song "Is it a Crime" by Sade. The candles had become a ritual ever since I started at WTLK back in '89. The flickering light and smell of jasmine were relaxing and made me more introspective -- aromatherapy, they called it.

The faint candlelight also served as a camouflage for the dilapidated condition of the studio. The carpet was covered with decade old cigarette burns, the plaster was falling off the ceiling, and the exposed water pipe leaked into an old Folgers coffee can. "Sade, your song is right on time," I said as I glanced around the room. "This place is a crime."

Just before the song ended, I put on my headphones and adjusted the volume to the mic. The digital clock on the console read 11:55 PM. "Five more minutes and I'm outta this dump!" I said with contempt. My producer, Mitch, was in the control booth next door setting up the calls. I could see him through the large soundproof window. I switched on the intercom to get his attention.

"Well, Mitch, in a few minutes it'll all be over," I told him. "The final episode of The Green Hornet and Kato."

"Don't be so dramatic, Julian," he said in his usual smooth tone. "It's not the end of the world, just another phase in life."

"Listen to you, sounding all philosophical. That must be one of the benefits of old age."

"Who you callin' old?"

Mitch had smooth dark brown skin and short black hair with grey streaks. He looked very distinguished but he had recently turned fifty-five and was getting touchy about his age.

"Look, we can arm wrestle for your Viagra prescription later," I laughed. "Right now, let's get to work and try to wrap up the show on time."

There were five people on hold. Mitch printed their names in bold letters on a piece of paper and taped it to the window. That was our sophisticated communication system. "Five, four, three, two -- ," I heard Mitch count. Then he pointed at me to signal we were on the air.

"Welcome back to Love, Lust, and Lies on WTLK," I said in my deep radio voice. "We only have enough time for two calls, so let's go straight to the phones. Adam, you're on. What's your question or issue?"

"Hey, Julian! I just want to congratulate you on your new show," he said. "I hope you don't get big-headed and forget where you came from when you blow up."

"Negro, please! I've been struggling in this business for fifteen years. I've never been about money or fame," I told him. "I've never owned a new car, don't own a nice watch, I cut my own hair, and every night I go home to a ten-year-old girl who's goin' through puberty. Now, if that doesn't keep you grounded, nothing will. Thanks for calling." (Click)

Mitch was laughing his ass off because he knew I was telling the truth. I drove a beat up 1994 Toyota Camry, which I bought used in 1996. And my scratched up Gucci was ten years old. I laughed myself because when I looked down at it, it had stopped working -- again.

"Okay, Sharon. You're my last caller!" I said as I pushed the button to line two. "What's your question or issue?"

"My question is about love and commitment," she sounded depressed.

"We don't have much time, sweetheart, what's your point?"

"My point is, when you love someone you should stand by them no matter what, right?"

"I agree, if you truly love someone, nothing should come between you."

"Well, I thought my husband loved me, until --

She stopped in mid-sentence.

"Come on! It can't be that serious," I said jokingly trying to cheer her up. "What happened? Did you gain a little weight, loose your job, get a bad hair weave? What?"

"No, Julian, he left me because I was raped. The doctors said the damage was so severe I'll never be able to bear children," she said. Then she began to cry. "And after going through that hell, can you believe that no-good bastard had the nerve to tell me it was my fault that I got raped? How's that for love and commitment?"

I hit the mute button on my microphone and buried my head into my hands. When I looked up at Mitch, I knew he was thinking exactly what I was thinking. Why tonight -- of all nights? The clock on the console read, 11:56. We were almost out of time. But I was determined not to end my last show on a negative note.

"Are you all right Sharon?" I asked. "Do you want me to put you in touch with a therapist?"

"No, Julian, thank you. I'll be fine. It happened a long time ago." She quickly composed herself. "I'm just sick and tired of men using the word love at their convenience. The only thing they love is getting pus --

"Hold up," I cut her off, "I get the point! And you're right, love is a serious word -- men shouldn't say it if they don't mean it."

"Have you ever been in love, Julian?"

"Hold on a second, who's interviewing who?"

"Sorry, I didn't mean to offend you. But I was just wondering if there's ever been a woman worthy of your love."

I paused for a second as I reminisced on my wife, Carmen. Her picture was right in front of me, the one we took in Vegas on our honeymoon. I never spoke about her on the air since that day -- it was too painful. But I decided to open up. Maybe I was caught up in the moment, or by the vulnerability in Sharon's voice.

"Yes, I've been in love -- once," I told her.

"Are you still with her?"

"No, she's gone -- cancer took her."

"I guess we have something in common, Julian," she said, then she hesitated. "We're both alone."

Mitch was nodding in agreement. We both knew why. But I wasn't about to go there on the air.

"Like you said, it happened a long time ago," I told her. "You've got to let go of the pain in order to move on. And speaking of moving on, it's time for me get out of here."

The phone lines were ringing off the hook, but there was no time left for calls. The management at WTLK was strict about ending segments on time, especially since the station was programmed to go off the air at midnight. The clock on the panel read 11:58.

"Before I go, I want to end the show with an inspirational poem, the way I always do on Hot Buttered Soul Friday. I call this piece Movin' On. I reached for my notebook. "This one's for you Sharon, and all the ladies out there who are trying to move on." I cleared my throat and began to recite.

every experience
be it bad or good
teaches us a lesson
or at least it should

mr. right
turned out to be mr. wrong
learn from your mistakes
keep the faith
press forward sista
move on

dry your tears
wipe your eyes
find the strength
look inside
don't call him
don't see him
don't play one sad song
block his cell
delete his email
look ahead my sista
just move on

love yourself
take care of yourself
and if the need arises
sista please yourself

do a check up
from the neck up
say a prayer
sista hold your head up

cause one day you'll have all the joy your heart can hold
and then you'll be glad you pressed forward
and so thankful you moved on

After I finished reading, I felt choked up. I was closing the show for the last time. I hesitated for a second, then I let it go.

"Goodnight, Chicago," I said emotionally. "Thanks for allowing me into your homes, your hearts, and your minds -- peace."

Mitch quickly turned on the studio lights and came running over. He was holding a bottle of Dom Perignon and two glasses. He shook it up and then popped the cork. Champagne sprayed everywhere.

"Congratulations, Julian," he said as he poured it over my head. "You're finally escaping this concentration camp!"

"Yeah, it took me over ten years, like Shawshank Redemption, but I finally made it," I laughed as I wiped the champagne from my eyes.

He poured two glasses and handed me one.

"I'd like to propose a toast," he said. "To the most outspoken, talented, and arrogant son-of-a-bitch in talk radio."

"Hear, hear!" I said as we tapped glasses.

"Now, I wanna propose a toast. To the man who has given me inspiration, motivation, and die-reaction. Here's to you, Mitch."

We toasted again. Then there was an uncomfortable silence. I had dreaded this moment all week.

"You know, Mitch. I'm sorry I couldn't work out a deal to take you with me. You know how much you --

"Look, Julian," he interrupted, "this is your time -- your season. You were born for this. Besides, I've got a big deal I've been working on. I only wish Carmen could've been here to share this moment with you."

"Yeah, me too." I stared at her picture on the console. "She's the reason why I stuck with this raggedy ass station for as long as I did."

Mitch walked over and put his hand on my shoulder. He was a short man, standing about five-six. I towered over him at six-three but he had a charismatic way of speaking that demanded attention.

"It's been two years, Julian. When are you gonna let it go?" he said in that fatherly tone. "You said it in your poem, life goes on! Why don't you stop feeling sorry for yourself and start taking some of your own advice?"

"Look, Mitch, dating is not high on my list of priorities!" I said as I pulled away. Then I started packing up my equipment. "I'm moving to Houston in two days. I just want to finish packing, have a farewell drink with Eddie at Club Nimbus, then get the hell outta here!"

"Sounds like a plan, Julian." He poured himself another drink. "But you know as well as I do, Sharon was right, you are alone. You should've asked her out -- she's obviously single," he added sarcastically. "Tell you what, why don't we see if she's still on the line."

Mitch reached for the button on the console. All five phone lines were lit and my microphone was still on.

"Cool out, Mitch!" I grabbed at his hand. But he managed to press the speaker phone button for line two. There was a sudden click then a dial tone.

"It's best that she's gone, anyway," he said as he backed away from the console.

"And why is that -- not that I care."

"Because Samantha will never allow another woman into her life, or yours, not until she learns to accept that you are a man -- with needs."

He sat down his champagne glass on the console and headed for the door.

"Where you goin'?" I walked towards him holding my glass. "I thought we were celebrating tonight."

"I'm going home to my woman, what about you?" he said as he opened the door. "I really hope you find what you're looking for in Houston, Julian." Then he turned off the lights and walked out.

As I watched the candle wax slowly melting away, I thought about what my father told me before he died; "Son, money can buy a lot of things in this world but it can't buy back time." As I stood there in the dim silence of my spiritual ambiance, I had to face up to reality of what Mitch said. He's right, I thought to myself. Samantha was too possessive and I was only making matters worse by not having a life of my own.

I gathered up the rest of my things and placed them inside my gym bag. Before I put away the picture of Carmen, I looked at it. Then I spoke to it.

"You know I'll always love you, Carmen, but it's time for me to move on with my life!" I said, as tears rolled down my face. "My mind needs it, my heart needs it, my soul needs it. And I ain't gonna lie, baby, my body needs it, too." I laughed.

I kissed her picture, then placed it into my bag. "You'll always be my Queen."

On the way out the door I blew out my jasmine scented candles and put them inside my bag. At that moment, I decided it was the only baggage I was carrying with me to Houston.

Predictable!!!
By Anita Pearson
This book was totally predictable, you could just read the book cover, and not bother with the rest. I had such high hopes for an exciting end, but no.. nothing surprising or interesting about it.
Not only did the main character not learn his lesson (he had unprotected sex with his next partner) but he failed to even alert the authorities. None of the characters were well developed except for maybe Julian, but neither the `crazed' stalker nor his Houston love interest had any depth as characters. Since this book was not written in first person this is inexcusable.
This was a fast read, but without the twists and turns or any oohs and ahhs, not really worth the time.

Introduction to International and Global Studies, by Shawn Smallman, Kimberley Brown

This innovative introduction to international and global studies offers instructors in both the humanities and the social sciences an up-to-date and comprehensive approach to teaching undergraduates in this rapidly growing interdisciplinary field. Shawn Smallman and Kimberley Brown first present students with the key concepts necessary to understand the intellectual and structural underpinnings of globalization. Thoughtfully building the presentation of core themes--including the history of globalization; economic, political, and cultural globalization; security; energy; and development--the authors examine such timely topics as commodity chains, labor, human rights, and multinational corporations, and provide keen insights into more familiar themes, such as food, health and disease, and the environment.

Smallman and Brown focus on teaching students about global citizenship while emphasizing the development of skills for critical thinking and understanding differing viewpoints. Explaining the historical roots of current challenges and discussing engaging real-life cases, they encourage students to understand their local context from a global perspective and to develop their abilities to negotiate a rapidly changing world. A chapter on what students can do with a degree in international and global studies includes a planning guide for postgraduate career and academic choices. The textbook includes maps and illustrations, and, at the end of each chapter, a glossary, questions for reflection, and student activities.

An online teacher's manual is available for those adopting the textbook. It includes sample examination questions, additional resources for each chapter, and recommendations for adaptations for students with particular learning needs including those students whose first language is not English.

Review
"Smallman and Brown have written an undergraduate textbook about a vast and complex set of issues, dealing with a large number of controversial and polemical issues in a fair and balanced way. This is not an easy accomplishment, and they have pulled it off. The authors have done their homework in producing this excellent new textbook for teaching international studies."--Glibert Merkx, director, Center for International Studies, and director, International and Area Studies, Duke University

"Well conceived, well executed, and well written, this introduction to the increasingly popular interdisciplinary field of international studies is broad, coherent, and balanced in introducing college-level students to an important and rapidly developing field. The scholarship embedded in this book is sound and amazingly up to date, the topics appropriate and intelligently and engagingly treated. This new textbook should find a large audience in undergraduate courses in the burgeoning field of international and global studies, and it will also offer general readers entree into a fascinating topic."--Peter A. A book I would use if I were teaching.
By Alcibiades
This is a book that I would certainly use if I were an educator. It explains concepts in a clear, concise manner and raises numerous important questions for both serious and casual students of the subject matter to consider. Additionally, it includes a section devoted entirely to career advice for those who wish to pursue the study of International Affairs at a higher level. Those who prefer a more Rationalist approach may be disappointed by the fact that the book does not take any amount of time to address logic games or otherwise present a quantitative approach to political science. However, this is a large part of what makes the book accessible and approachable to casual students. Were I teaching an International Relations 101 class to Freshmen at a community college, this would be my first choice to assign my students.
I have read this book for fun and it functions as a perfect complement to the textbooks I actually have been assigned as a student of International Relations. Indeed, it even helps function to clarify concepts that other texts intentionally obfuscate. While certain passages of the text make clear the fact that this book was written specifically for students, I would highly recommend it to the casual reader as well.

What I Was Looking For
By Annee Hall
I teach an AICE General Paper course for which students must write essays that cover a variety of global topics for the exam . There is no textbook for the course, and I feel that, as students in the U. S., my students are not as prepared as their global counterparts to discuss in depth the topics that they must write about for the General Paper exam. This book covers all that is needed. it contains prereading questions, scaffolding, post reading questions, activities and vocabulary lists along with charts and graphs, as well as other visuals. Instead of pulling from a variety of sources, I now have one source that I can use that covers many topics, so much of the work has been done for me. I am very happy with this book.

Hyperobjects: Philosophy and Ecology after the End of the World (Posthumanities), by Timothy Morton

Having set global warming in irreversible motion, we are facing the possibility of ecological catastrophe. But the environmental emergency is also a crisis for our philosophical habits of thought, confronting us with a problem that seems to defy not only our control but also our understanding. Global warming is perhaps the most dramatic example of what Timothy Morton calls “hyperobjects”—entities of such vast temporal and spatial dimensions that they defeat traditional ideas about what a thing is in the first place. In this book, Morton explains what hyperobjects are and their impact on how we think, how we coexist with one another and with nonhumans, and how we experience our politics, ethics, and art.

Moving fluidly between philosophy, science, literature, visual and conceptual art, and popular culture, the book argues that hyperobjects show that the end of the world has already occurred in the sense that concepts such as world, nature, and even environment are no longer a meaningful horizon against which human events take place. Instead of inhabiting a world, we find ourselves inside a number of hyperobjects, such as climate, nuclear weapons, evolution, or relativity. Such objects put unbearable strains on our normal ways of reasoning.

Insisting that we have to reinvent how we think to even begin to comprehend the world we now live in, Hyperobjects takes the first steps, outlining a genuinely postmodern ecological approach to thought and action.

Review

In Hyperobjects, Timothy Morton brings to bear his deep knowledge of a wide array of subjects to propose a new way of looking at our situation, which might allow us to take action toward the future health of the biosphere. Crucially, the relations between Buddhism and science, nature and culture, are examined in the fusion of a single vision. The result is a great work of cognitive mapping, both exciting and useful.

—Kim Stanley Robinson, author of Shaman, 2312, and the Mars trilogy

It makes me think differently
By Reviewer11922
I am a little over halfway through the book, and I am enjoying it. I am in the applied social sciences, and my research examines how social systems and ecological systems influence each other, so I welcome anything that helps me to think creatively on that matter. I also am not a philosopher, so I don't know if I am really the best to judge the quality of ideas in this book.

One thing I am not so sure about though. Our brains weed out the large majority of the sensory information that hits us. Which means we continually only have partial pictures or models in our head of pretty much everything. So, doesn't that make everything a hyperobject? Isn't that kind of the basis of phenomenology in general?

Anyway, it is an interesting read so far, and I am enjoying trying to apply the concepts Merton is using, although I don't know if I will stick with this framework.

Consilience of ecophilosophy at it's best
By J. E. Williams
Occasionally, a new book comes along with a concept so startling that you never see the world in the same way again. Hyperobjects is such a book. Concepts, ideas, and entities that Morton terms "hyperobjects" challenge and then defeat traditional thinking about how the worlds works. This way of thinking is critical to fully understanding the consequences of climate change, the technology revolution, chemicalization of the environment, and the coming paradigm shift resulting from the confluence of these changes. Transformational thinking, such as Morton presents in Hyperobjects, is not the first step - that occurred in the 1970s with the whole earth concept and later presented as the Gaia hypothesis - it's the first leap into comprehending the world we live in now and that near future generations will inhabit.

Meandering and inefficient
By Ecologist
Based on some comments on line, I thought this book would be a useful exploration of environmental ideas that have widespread subscription, yet little understanding by its subscribers. Sustainable development, mass extinction, climate change, and ecomodernism are examples.

As a natural scientist who believes the separation of knowledge into natural and social science and the humanities needs to eliminated, this sounded promising. Environmental ideas are syntheses of all three ways of knowing, so I was excited by the author's approach.

The natural science, however, is, in most places, extraordinarily weak and often wrong. The use of the personal and popular, described by the author as devices for the exposition, is actually a mask for what the author cannot resolve or treat efficiently. Sometimes they seem almost deliberate distractions, like using display to distract from lack of coherent content.

I really cannot recommend this book, though I admit that perhaps it simply does not work for me. Clearly others like it.

I see nothing new or sensible in hyper objects. Indeed, it makes a muddle of important constructs of pressing importance and that is hard to tolerate.

The Hole Book (Peter Newell Children's Books), by Peter Newell

"Tom Potts was fooling with a gun
(Such follies should not be),
When—bang! The pesky thing went off
most unexpectedly!"

Long before Richard Scarry or Dr. Seuss, an American artist delighted a generation of children and their parents with hilarious, topsy-turvy illustrations and slightly subversive tales told in rhyme. This was illustrator/author Peter Newell.

Originally published in 1908, The Hole Book remains as profoundly enjoyable and incredibly popular as ever. With humorous text and irresistible drawings, this classic work will delight readers of all ages with the story of Tom Potts' bullet, which leads him through all sorts of unexpected scenes and adventures, each funnier than the last.

Peter Newell (1862-1924) began his career as an artist drawing portraits, using crayons as his medium. In his fantastic humor, many believe, is the first appearance of the gentle humor of the absurd which The New Yorker has subsequently developed to such a high level.

Cheap reprint of a classic book
By Michael Adams
This is a crummy reprint of a wonderful classic children's book. First of all, there is no hole in the book, which spoils the novelty. Second, the original colors are missing, as the pictures are all printed in black-and-white. Third, the pages are printed on the wrong sides, so the text you read on any given page doesn't correspond to the picture on the facing page! If you remember reading The Hole Book as a child, as I do, you will be tremendously disappointed by this reprint.

Excellent. It sticks with you for decades.
By A Customer
Of all of the books that I read when I was a child, this is the only one that I truly never forget. I have captivated the attention of my friends and their children by reciting some of the best verses. The rhyme and meter is exquisite, providing an almost musical theme through each episode. The vocabulary is perfect for young people and fun for adults. It utilizes advanced words, while not burying their meaning from beginning readers. The characters lend themselves to creative new voices for each reader to explore. All of theses remarkable qualities, and it maintains a serious lesson for young people, that guns are not for fooling around.

Rosa Parks: My Story, by Rosa Parks, Jim Haskins

Rosa Parks is best known for the day she refused to give up her seat on a segregated bus, sparking the Montgomery, Alabama, bus boycott. Yet there is much more to her story than this one act of defiance. In this straightforward, compelling autobiography, Rosa Parks talks candidly about the civil rights movement and her active role in it. Her dedication is inspiring; her story is unforgettable.

Gr 2-4--Two picture-book biographies. Holland begins with Mandela's childhood as the son of a Thembu chief and continues through his work for fair government for all people in South Africa, his imprisonment, to his release in 1990. There is little else about this world leader for this age group. Rosa Parks follows the same format: early life, civil rights work, imprisonment, and release. The information is much the same as in Eloise Greenfield's Rosa Parks (Crowell, 1973) and David A. Adler's A Picture Book of Rosa Parks (Holiday, 1993). Both of these books have a clear, direct writing style and are illustrated with colorful, attractive illustrations. Suitable additions.

Even those familiar with her name will realize on reading this engrossing account how little they really know of Parks's life and the events that surrounded the dawning Civil Rights movement. Setting her historic refusal to give up her seat on a bus in the context of a life that began in 1913 in rural Alabama dramatizes the fact that her action came at a time and place that gave it the force to challenge the rigors of a lopsided system of justice. Few will be unmoved by the tactics employed by whites to disrupt the subsequent boycott; at the center, always, is Parks's dignified, calm recounting of outrages against her and other women and men, giving her words weight and impact as no raw fury could. Like sitting at the knee of an elder with much to tell, reading her story leads to ever more questions (``What was it really like then?'') and shock that such injustices not only existed in the recent past but still linger. Truth v. Myth
By E. R. Bird
When Nikki Giovanni came out with her picture book biography of Rosa Parks ("Rosa") not too long ago, I was incensed by a tribute that I felt fell rather short of a rather admirable person. So when I reviewed that book I pulled out every biography, children's and otherwise, that I could find on Rosa Parks herself. Some of these were misleading, some simplistic, but one was a fine and hearty tribute. Is it any wonder then that that same book, "Rosa Parks: My Story" should have been written by Ms. Parks herself? With some aid from Jim Haskins, this book serves beautifully as the quintessential Rosa Parks story. It crushes myths beneath its heel, gives a great deal of factual information about the time in which she lived, brings to life the danger she faced, and is just about one of the most engaging books ever written by an average citizen. It is heroic without boasting or bragging a jot.

Okay, children. We all know the tale of Rosa Parks, yes? We know that one day she was asked to give up her seat on a bus for a white man and she refused. We know that she was arrested and jailed for this supposed "crime". And we know that this was really the impetus that began the Civil Rights Movement and that Rosa would remain a symbol of the times forevermore. Some of may even think that she was tired and that that was the reason why she didn't move. This little detail is not true in the least, of course. But what else do you know about Ms. Parks? Did you know that at the time that she was arrested, Ms. Parks was a secretary for the NAACP and that her husband was a longtime Civil Right activist? Did you know that she grew up without a father and that she remembered clearly the nights she'd spend next to her grandfather's gun, listening for the Klan? Or that the bus driver that pulled her off and got her arrested was the same man that had thrown her off a bus several years before? Before we start making out heroes out to be superhuman symbols, let's just step back and take a moment to hear what Rosa Parks really felt about her life and times. It turns out that when you remove all the mythos and glamour, what you get is a women who was even more admirable in real life than any story could conjure up.

What I particularly liked about this book were the unexpected details At one point Rosa talks about attending the Montgomery Industrial School when she turned eleven. It was a school run by a faculty of white women. Rosa notes, "That meant that when they came south to educate black girls, they were ostracized by the white community in Montgomery. Any social life they had, had to be with blacks, and therefore they went to black churches and so on". I think you could probably write a pretty interesting work of non-fiction with that as your story right there! Parks, quite rightly, has nothing but great respect for Mr. E.D. Nixon, but she doesn't fail to mention some of his stupider thoughts when it came to women. "Women don't need to be nowhere but in the kitchen", he would say to Rosa (his secretary at the time). Rosa later explains that, "Nowadays, women wouldn't stand for being kept so much in the background, but back then women's rights hadn't become a popular cause yet". I guess that all depends on how you want to categorize "women's rights". But that's what I enjoyed about the book. Not only does Ms. Parks set the record straight about the history and the times she grew up in, she's just as willing to show that Civil Rights activists, for all their heroism, were not flawless saints. And that doesn't make them any less admirable.

When kids come up to my Reference Desk and ask me to recommend a good autobiography, I'll be in a difficult position. On the one hand, I'm not overly familiar with a lot of children's biographies. On the other hand, now that I know this one, it will certainly be the first to come to mind anytime someone asks. Should I feel guilty about always falling back onto "Rosa Parks: My Story"? Probably not. A great autobiography, a singular tale, and rousing bit of myth debunking. You want to get the story straight? Come to the source.

A Strong Woman
By Amy Chang
Rosa Parks was a Black woman who lived in a time of unequality. Blacks were being treated as though they were lower and were lost of the many priveleges that white people had. Well, Rosa Parks didn't let what they thought get in her way. She stood for what she believed in and stuck by it all the way. By refusing to sit at the end of the bus, Rosa showed me how strong, independent, daring, and brave she was. She knew of the consequences yet it didn't stop her. I really admire her.
This book came across me after my friend Catherine read it and recommended it to me. She told me that it was a good book and that I should read it. She told me that it would touch my heart and would help me see Rosa Parks in a different way. Seeing the cover, I knew that it would talk about one of the most important events of her life-the incident at the bus.
I enjoyed this book very much. My favorite part was when she refused to sit at the back of the bus.She demonstrated acts of bravery and courage. She showed them that she was equal and that no one had the right to treat them differently. That event also proved that small acts can make big differences in the world. One little protest made a positive change in the way of the world. This helped me want to be more active in our world. I realized that the blacks had to go through so much to be where they are today. It helped me appreciate them more. This book should be read by everyone!

Rosa Parks
By A Customer
As the bus driver asked the blacks in the front of the colored section to stand up most of them stood, Rosa Parks just scooted to a new seat and made an available seat. She said, "No." The driver looked straight at her and said, "Well, I'm going to have you arrested." Then, she calmly said, "You may do that." Rosa Parks was arrested that day of December 1, 1955 and maintained her dignity going through the process of getting arrested and going to jail. She didn't give up her seat because she was tired, she didn't give up her seat because she was tired of giving in. Rosa Parks was born February 4, 1913, in Tuskegee, Alabama. She died on October 24, 2005, in Detroit, Michigan. Her book, Rosa Parks: My Story, is very interesting it explained her importance in Civil Rights and other movements. It talks about how there were killings and white people being ostracized of being part of the Civil Rights Movement. She is inspirational and has a very clear mind. This book is for anyone who likes reading about the Civil Rights Movement and the view of black people in the early 1900s.

This book recognizes a lot of the Civil Rights Movement being that she was a part of the mistreatment of African-Americans. As said in the first paragraph she didn't give up her bus seat because she was tired of giving in to white people intimidating her and other African-Americans. That and other arrestments started the Montgomery bus boycott.

She recognizes the fact a lot that everyone's the same and shouldn't be treated any differently than others. She also says that Dr. Martin Luther King, jr. made a point about not fighting back with violence. When Rosa was young she didn't know what nonviolence really was. All her and her brother knew were to say if someone did something to them they would go right back and do something to them. After Dr. King's speeches' she realized that he believed strongly in nonviolence and listened to Mohandas Gandhi on liberating India from Great Britain.

Rosa is and inspiration. She will maintain her dignity in bad times, protest for what she believes in, and is very caring to her family, friends, and society. Rosa has helped a race maintain their dignity and has helped the youth to grow up and try to make a difference in their lives and other's.

Rosa has been a national icon when you think of the Civil Rights Movement. Her nickname is the Mother of Civil Rights just for her accomplishments. It wasn't because she didn't give up her seat. It was because she is a strong woman and cares about her friends and family. Rosa Parks died a great person. Even if she got arrested she is still a great person.
