Damming the Delaware: The Rise and Fall of Tocks Island Dam, by Richard C. Albert

First published in 1987 and named a Choice Outstanding Academic Book the following year, Damming the Delaware is the definitive study of two hundred years of water management history along the Delaware River. The history of the Tocks Island Dam Project is traced from an early 1783 antidam treaty, through the highly emotional environmental controversy in the 1970s, to the historic Good Faith agreement of the 1980s. The story involves the water politics of four states, two major U.S. cities, and the federal government, plus the influence of the environmental movement over major public works projects. In this second edition, the author updates the Tocks Island/Delaware River story to 2005. A major shift in the underlying philosophies of Delaware River management during the intervening years is described along with various successes and failures in water management. A Foreword to the second edition is written by Maya van Rossum, the Delaware Riverkeeper and Executive Director of the Delaware Riverkeeper Network, a nonprofit environmental advocacy organization that has both successfully fought dam projects and removed existing dams.

From Library Journal
In contrast to incisive analyses of Western water issues (e.g., Marc P. Reisner, Cadillac Desert , LJ 8/86), Albert of the Delaware River Basin Commission provides a balanced but uninspiring summary of the public record on water resource planning for the last major undammed river in the United States. Tocks Island Dam has a convoluted history that spans two centuries and involves four states, two major cities, and many federal agencies. The project, deauthorized by both historical accidents and improved economic and environmental analyses, provides a history lesson in how societies and their governments change. Recommended. James R. Karr, Smithsonian Tropical Research Inst., Balboa, Panama

How the Good Guys Won a River Battle
By Amazon Customer
Okay, this book isn't for everyone. The price alone tells you that. But if you are a policy maker or an environmentalist interested in a success story, it could be a great investment. It is the tale of how one river remained damless, despite an authorized Army Corps of Engineers project. I liked the book because I am a canoer who has paddled the Delaware and a river activist who can use lots of tips.
The author, Richard Albert, provides an insider's perspective. Most recently, he was a supervising engineer and basin planner for the Delaware River Basin Commission. He's been involved in river studies for three decades.
The Delaware is a fairly small river, draining only four-tenths of one percent of the continental U.S. Yet almost ten percent of the nation's population relies on its basin for water, and Delaware Bay is within a day's drive of about 40 percent of the entire U.S. population. Various groups have wanted dams on the Delaware to provide water, electrical power and flood control. As Albert explains, no dams have been built because New York City, New York State, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware could never fully agree on a project. At the top end of the river, New York City wants to protect its drinking water supply, which is based on huge reservoirs near the headwaters of the Delaware in upstate New York. At the bottom end, fishermen and others want to assure clean, regular water flow, something that could be diminished by one or more dams. In between, there are many opinions about the potential impact of one or more dams on the river.
Albert provides a long historical perspective, beginning in the colonial era, when navigation was the primary use of the river. States along the river agreed to prohibit dams, and this perspective ruled until the early twentieth century. Water supply, hydrological power, flood control and recreation became important issues in the twentieth century, and Albert gives them detailed treatment.
His description of the 1960s and 1970s includes some bizarre twists to the story. Two examples stand out for me. First, there's eutrophication. That's the overproduction of algae and plants caused by too much phosphorus or nitrogen in water. It stinks, too. Environmental studies suggested that the large number of poultry farms upstream of the proposed Tock's Island Dam would turn the new reservoir into "one gigantic cesspool." I call this segment of the story, "How Chicken Poop Saved the Delaware." Second, the whole land acquisition process went sour. The Corps of Engineers began acquiring land for a huge National Recreation Area above and below the Delaware Water Gap in 1964. By 1970 the project was still on hold, and "hippy" squatters began settling on the new public lands. Local residents were already concerned about the impact of tens of thousands of visitors on their roads, water supply, power supply, etc., and they were none too happy to see Haight-Ashbury move its act into rural New Jersey. In the end, unpaid local activists played an important role in helping to achieve the 1982 "Good Faith Agreement" among the mayor of New York and the governors of New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware. Everyone agreed to leave the river free-running until after the year 2000 - and then reconsider the dam as a water supply source.
A friend and I canoed from Port Jervis, New York to the Delaware Water Gap in August 1999, and we camped right where the dam was proposed. Those who want to enjoy the Delaware as a free-flowing river after 2001 might want to pick up a copy of this book.

A Field Manual of Camel Diseases: Traditional and Modern Healthcare for the Dromedary, by Ilse Khler-Rollefson, Paul Mundy, Evelyn M

This is the first practical field manual about camel diseases for veterinarians and livestock practitioners. This manual was compiled through a workshop involving 20 of the world's leading camel specialists, and details some 90 major camel ailments, ranging from abortions to wry-neck syndrome. For each problem, it gives the symptoms of the disease, the causes, and simple prevention and treatment methods. It includes both treatments based on Western veterinary science, as well as those tried and tested by local healers and herders. The diseases are organized according to the part of the body affected and the symptoms. A section on procedures explains how to examine a camel, take samples for laboratory analysis, and apply various types of medicines.

Written in clear, simple language and richly illustrated with line drawings by African and Indian artists, this sourcebook is an invaluable aid to camel care.

Still good after all these years
By ex-grunt
Read this book many years ago and enjoyed it. I had forgotten the title and had to search many authors, and many descriptions of plot lines before I could find it again. Even though I knew the story, enough time had passed since came out that the re-read was enjoyable. The ending has a twist in it, too. One of the late Walter Wager's finest.

Greatest Action Novel Ever?
By Donald Wayne Demko
Walter Wager's TIME OF RECKONING has to rank as one of the greatest action novels ever written; why it hasn't been made into a movie is beyond me. Beginning with American troops liberating the Dachau Concentration Camp and seamlessly developing an intricate and moving plotline to the very last pages of the book, Wager illustrates a war story that mirrors how that level of horror never stops for some of the victims. The opening sequence of Ernest Beller, a three-year-old boy standing on the edge of a giant pit where the Americans are desperately trying to bury the decaying and disease-ridden bodies of the victims of the Nazi atrocoties is spell-binding, and the moment, nine years later, when the now Americanized Ernie Beller is confronted by thugs trying to mug him in the street is one of the most well-crafted scenes in any modern novel; I often read it to my high school students as an example of superb writing, and many of them clamor to borrow the book from me so that they can read it as well. Wager shows us the emotional and pshchological toll that war and violence can play on one individual, and when the government agent Merlin begins to try to unravel why all of these older ex-Nazis across the country are being killed off, one-by-one, decades after the war has ended, Wager brings us to one of the most exciting and moving climaxes in this genre of writing. The final page leaves the reader with a wry and yet chilling ending that you will not soon forget. I often think that the Bourne novels and movies owe a lot to this novel; no one does it better than Wager. If you have ever seen the movie TWILIGHT'S LAST GLEAMING (based on the Wager novel VIPER THREE) than you know the standard he sets with a blend of provocative social commentary with powerful action and suspense. It doesn't get any better than TIME OF RECKONING.

Really excellent

I was a little concerned that this might have too much super-grim Nazi death camp description, but not so. This is in fact a very exciting tale of two people --one a US spy/assassin, the other a young doctor/death camp survivor -- on two different missions, and how they are expertly woven together at the end. A fine book.

A Book of Wonderful Thing
By B. Falk
And indeed this entire book is filled with wonderful, fascinating things. We are with pioneer archaeologists as they dig through fifty centuries of time. We travel to
ancient Thebes, the Royal Valley, City of the Sun King. We learn how, after 4,600 years, the royal tomb of the Giza Pyramids was discovered, excavated, and
reconstructed-and what happened to those who dared to penetrate its secrets. We are witness to the incredible vision that greeted members of the Carter-Lord
Carnarvon expedition as they entered the perfectly preserved tomb of King Tut. Did his mummy really hold a curse? We read about the modern-day professor, who
upon entering a rich and ornate royal tomb found in the dust ou the floor footprints of the last person to leave-3,250 years ago!
Here is the world's most exciting detective story, told by a master reporter and Egyptologist, and filled with the adventures of those who were the first to unravel the
mysteries of this ancient
land. No one will ever know the real secret of the Sphinx, but modern archaeologists can tell us about the strange and fascinating people who built it.
THE LOST PHARAOHS takes you on an unforgettable journey along the Nile. Here is a civilization which has vanished and been recaptured, in our own time and on
these pages.
In search for material for his books on Ancient Egypt Leonard Cottrell has traveled nearly half a million miles. It is this on-the-spot reporting that makes his books
"come alive," even though he may be writing about a civilization 5,000 years old!
Born in Wolverhampton, England, in 1914, Mr. Cottrell is a senior writer and producer with the feature department of tine B.B.C. During the war he was a foreign
correspondent attached to the R.A.F. in the Mediterranean area.
Mr. Cottrell's devotion to the study of archaeology and history culminated in a highly praised B.B.C. series on Ancient Egypt. His several books on the ancient world
have received high critical acclaim both in England and the United States.

Gripping stuff
By NYC
Once I opened this book I couldn't put it down. Leonard Cottrell writes in an engaging way, explaining how successive generations of Egyptologists developed the understanding of the ancient Egyptians, and their pyramids, palaces and temples. He often writes in the first person, so it sounds like an congenial uncle recounting stories of the halcyon days of archeology. The politics of the ancient Egyptian court, and the skullduggery of the ancient tomb robbers really come to life through Mr Cottrell's writing.

By Mr Cottrell's own admission this is not an academic textbook so don't expect lists of dates and names, chronological charts of important events and suchlike. Also this is not a book about the pyramids so there is no detailed technical explanation of how they were constructed. Mr Cottrell focuses more on the culture of the times, and the motivations of the pharaohs and their courtiers.

Some of the events I had read about before, like the discovery of the Rosetta Stone, but Mr Cottrell unfolds the story like a detective novel that really keeps you on the edge of your seat. Other things I had not read about before, like the relationship between Howard Carter and Lord Carnarvon, and the strange course of events that eventually resulted in the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb. The lively description of the five thousand year battle between state officials and tomb robbers is particularly entertaining although the theft of a priceless tomb mural hours before Mr Cottrell's arrival felt rather gratuitous and grated with me.

One thing that came across clearly was the vast length of time that the pharaohs ruled over Egypt, which is difficult to comprehend at first. For example when Herodotus wrote about the Pyramid of Cheops around 450 BC it was already 2000 years old, so it was similar to us writing about the Roman invasion of Britain.

As you might expect in such a personal account, there are a few editorial comments, particularly about the poor state of funding for future digs, and the challenges of international politics. But these don't detract from the whole and actually serve as their own historical record of the 1960s when Mr Cottrell wrote the book.

There are only a few photos, but those that there are have been carefully selected to illustrate a particular point and do their job pretty well.

Overall I would strongly recommend this short book to anyone who seeks an diverting introduction to Egyptology and Egyptologists.

Car Country: An Environmental History (Weyerhaeuser Environmental Books), by Christopher W. Wells

For most people in the United States, going almost anywhere begins with reaching for the car keys. This is true, Christopher Wells argues, because the United States is Car Country―a nation dominated by landscapes that are difficult, inconvenient, and often unsafe to navigate by those who are not sitting behind the wheel of a car.

The prevalence of car-dependent landscapes seems perfectly natural to us today, but it is, in fact, a relatively new historical development. In Car Country, Wells rejects the idea that the nation's automotive status quo can be explained as a simple byproduct of an ardent love affair with the automobile. Instead, he takes readers on a tour of the evolving American landscape, charting the ways that transportation policies and land-use practices have combined to reshape nearly every element of the built environment around the easy movement of automobiles. Wells untangles the complicated relationships between automobiles and the environment, allowing readers to see the everyday world in a completely new way. The result is a history that is essential for understanding American transportation and land-use issues today.

Review
"One of the great strengths of the book is Wells’s meticulous work in revealing how the institutional, economic, and mental arrangements supporting ‘Car Country’ were set in place during the interwar years. . . . Wells’s book is a remarkable achievement."―Theodore Strathman, Southern California Quarterly

"For students and inhabitants of car country, Wells offers a terrific excavation of the sprawlscape that still drives our days."―Human Ecology

"A fresh, well-documented history of roadbuilding policies in the United States between 1900 and 1960."―James M. Rubenstein, Journal of American History

"Relatively few academic geographers have focused their research and publishing directly on the automobile and its geographical implications for life in the United States. Yet nothing over the past century has had a greater effect on America’s geography than the public’s evolving dependence on the motor car, and, as well, the motor truck. . . . Christopher Wells’s opus will excite more geographers to focus on automobility as a fundamental factor underlying the American experience."―John A. Jackle, The AAG Review of Books

"In Car Country, Christopher W. Wells offers a compelling history of America’s signature car-dependent landscapes. With lively anecdotes, effective imagery, and dozens of illustrations, the book also presents an accessible narrative that will help students visualize how Americans gradually and profoundly transformed their nation."―Michael R. Fine, American Historical Review

"Wells has produced an important and persuasive new chapter in the history of American car culture."―David Blanke, Register of the Kentucky Historical Society

"[Car Country] is an excellent and needed addition to the still remarkably small literature that explores the combined histories of Americans, automobiles, and the environment."―Tom McCarthy, The Michigan Historical Review

"Wells argues that in order to understand how automobility has become so deeply ‘locked in’ to contemporary American society, historians and geographers would do better to focus on the built landscape . . . [Car Country] belongs in the library of anyone interested in transportation, infrastructure, mobility, and land-use in twentieth-century America."―Ben Bradley, Journal of Historical Geography

"Wells has produced an important and persuasive new chapter in the history of American car culture."―David Blanke, Register of the Kentucky Historical Society

Review
"Car Country is arguably the most carefully researched, clearly written, and consistently engaging study anyone has yet written exploring the far-flung and extraordinarily complicated landscapes created by and for automobiles in the twentieth-century United States. The story is all the more remarkable because most of us who now inhabit this landscape take it so much for granted without having the slightest clue how it came into being."―William Cronon, from the Foreword

"Car Country offers a valuable historical perspective that is directly related to many pressing contemporary issues."―Owen D. Gutfreund, author of Twentieth Century Sprawl: Highways and the Reshaping of the American Landscape

About the Author
Christopher W. Wells is associate professor of environmental history at Macalester College in St. Paul, Minnesota.

A real gem
By Jim
Car Country is a remarkably thorough book about embracement of cars in the USA starting in the late 1800s. The historical perspective weaves various elements of rural and urban developments that enlighten and reveal how our road system evolved with significant environmental impacts at various times. The description of the Ford factory in Detroit is particularly powerful and contrasts with the light hearted pictures routinely observed of folks with their Model T. It is full of facts and scholarly documentation so would not be a quick read for most folks. However, this is the kind of book I enjoy. I came away with a much better appreciation and knowledge of how we got our car country.

An Asphalt Ecology
By Taylor rose
In Car Country, Christopher Wells attempts to answer a seemingly simple question about modern American life: Why is it so difficult to go anywhere without the use of an automobile? Over the course of 300 pages, Wells convincingly argues that our auto-dependence is less about cars themselves and more about roads, spatial arrangements, and land use.

Interest in automobiles began in the late nineteenth century with the advent of safer, reliable technology. The real watershed event, however, came with the release of the Ford Model T in 1909. As demand increased, then, supply developed around efficient production of vehicles. By the end of World War I, cars were everywhere, but in many ways, drivers had nowhere to go. Cars, Wells would correctly argue, were not the only thing consumers demanded. Drivers require unobstructed, smooth rights-of-way. They also need somewhere to park. Perhaps most importantly, they need social and legal arrangements that clearly delineate auto space from pedestrian space (i.e., human space)—as well as fast from slow, stop from go, that way from this way, etc. At a number of levels, American society in the 1920s and 30s brought those arrangements into being. From stoplights to one-way streets to gasoline filling stations, Car Country began to take shape during the first decades of the twentieth century. The author’s emphasis here—as throughout the book—is on the incremental development of the built environment to accommodate the proliferation of privately owned vehicles.

The importance of Car Country (the book) is twofold. First, it dissipates blame for the retrospective ills of a car-dependent landscape. Rather than wallowing in streetcar conspiracy theories or condemnations of aggressive motorists, the book provides a balanced, comprehensive narrative of automobiles as a pervasive historical force. Second, the book spells out the self-perpetuating cycle that has created (and continues to create) car dependency. Unlike most consumer products, automobiles demand vast networks of public infrastructure for use on a mass scale. In Car Country, Christopher Wells demonstrates that historically, Americans have been more than willing to promote that type of development, with the effect that we are only now beginning to recognize its consequences.

he sets the stage for how the automobile showed up and why cars like the Ford Model T were big hits
By KAV
Over many years of reading non-fiction, two books stand out in my mind. One was entitled The Age of Reagan and the other was a biography of the Beatles. Most of what I read in non-fiction books is quickly forgotten as I move on to another book. But these two books stuck because the authors embedded the story within a larger context, and thus, I was able to connect new information to what I already knew. The Reagan book simply set the stage for Ronald Reagan by explaining American politics after WWII. While there was little Reagan biography, the reader could see just how he appeared on the scene. We know about Reagan, but we know little of what was happening around him. In the Beatles book the musical landscape in Europe and America was discussed and the emergence of the Beatles fit in perfectly. We expected to see Reagan and the Beatles because we could see the progressions.

Christopher Wells has done the same thing in his book Car Country. In teaching my course the Automobile and American Culture I have read numerous books about car makers, car companies, and car culture. I have also read books about the development of our road system, which not page turners by any stretch of the imagination. While I have learned about Henry Ford, James Ward, and Albert Sloan, each book is too narrow in focus to look at the big picture. So, I quickly forget the details and then the point altogether. Car Country does it differently. Christoper Wells synthesizes cars and culture in a way that is both interesting and thought-provoking. Instead of starting the book with a look at the first car, he begins with people and dirt roads. By explaining the actions of people in the country and the big cities, he sets the stage for how the automobile showed up and why cars like the Ford Model T were big hits. I find myself reading a passage of this book and saying, "No kidding. I did not know that." I never saw the connection between the 1901 Mercedes and the Model T for example.

I initially overlooked this book because I thought it would be another assault on our automobile and how they are so bad for the environment, blah, blah, blah. But what Christopher Wells has done is introduce the automobile, nuts and all, to the reader in the context of early 20th century America. It is a fascinating book and will be highlighted and dog-eared for years to come.

bates pocket guide to physical examination
By Patricia Pray
I have used this book in my clinical setting and it is chock full of information and it is well written. It even has guidelines how to write up a clinical note with using the correct medical terms. I would suggest this book for anyone in the medical/nursing field who works with and assesses patients. A great pocket book

Great guide
By In med
I find the pocket book useful as a reference guide. If you want in depth explanations, get the full version of Bates but this one is excellent if you are on the wards or in a preceptor's office.

Clinical Essential
By Rhandhali
I picked up a copy of this to replace a lost copy of Oxford Handbook of Clinical Examination and, on comparison, I find the Bates book to be much more useful, particularly for a novice such as myself. While it does not have the wonderful vinyl cover of the Oxford handbook (which lets it double as a coaster) the writing is much clearer and much more concise. As a pocket reference it is far superior in it's brevity than other pocket manuals are in their verbosity.

What sets this book apart from others is the heavy use of illustration. Every pocket reference has pictures to some extent, but this Bates book substitutes the wall of text I've seen used to describe an examination in other books and substitutes it with a series of illustrations with brief textual narration. Procedures will be shown, rather than described, which is really what I'm looking for when I'm refreshing myself on a particular exam. While this is not necessarily desirable in a reference textbook such as the big version of Bates it works great when you are searching for a prompt or a reminder on a particular exam procedure. The organization is anatomical, basically head to toe followed by separate sections for musculoskeletal and neurological. The layout of the discrete, clean and simple. The graphics are all well done and photographs are clear and all excellent, unambiguous examples. The book is color throughout and printed on nice thick paper.

The only improvements I would add would be color coding for different sections and maybe a more durable cover; the paperboard cover is the weakest point of this book and I can envision terrible things for it after slinging it around for a year or two.
